If the Vols have 7 players go into the transfer portal between now and signing days then they can sign 32 because of the new NCAA ruling which is trying to ameliorate the impact of the new transfer rule ( players do not have to sit a year and can be immediately eligible ) on schools that are hit the hardest

Have to enter portal after Dec 12th. So those already in the portal don't count. Based on the discussions I've seen.

Do not believe that to be the case but could be wrong .The timeframe is meant to restrict those that will transfer for the 22 season no matter when they enter the transfer portal.It is too bad that those who went the portal and transffered this year can not be counted otherwise it would be a slam dunk that we could sign 32 .

Not nearly enough. I still say the portal has changed things and the rules need revision. They need to allow a number that brings you to 85. End of story.

This is also how I interpret it and have heard talking heads on shows etc...say it works.

That being said I think we can take a total of 32 right now.

Current total Roster = 118
Senior or Redshirt Senior = 29
On Scholarship = 71 of which 20 are on scholarship senior or Redshirt senior
Total scholarship potential end of the season 71 - 20 = 51 on scholarship
Max we can take would be 32 so that would put us theoretically at 51 + 32 = 83 going into spring ball if we sign that many to scholarship.

Note this is not calculating super seniors etc...only Senior or Redshirt Senior

As of a couple of weeks ago, UT had 81 players on the roster who came to K'ville on scholarship. Why lower numbers keep getting thrown out there is a mystery. Maybe they're referring to the number available to play not counting injuries?

Either way, how UT comes out of this year will have a lot to do with how many guys use their extra Covid season. If I am not mistaken, someone posted a list of only 6 or 7 guys who are currently on scholarship who will run out of eligibility.

I can't remember precisely how it works but I don't think the Covid year players count against your 85 cap. So if UT loses 7 from the current 80 then add 25 then 15 will need to be playing under the Covid rule.

The 4 guys who are Grad Transfers may or may not be on scholarship my list above does not have that answer
