How many years will it take

He will need 3 years of his recruits and 2013 doesn't count as his year. The cupboard is bare in the trenches and in overall team speed for his system.

I hate the Dooley-esque year 0 crap, it is still his year he is still accountable for it.

Up until Missouri I'd say he has done a fair job of it, Missouri we can maybe count as a fluke, all I want to see is a team play inspired football. I didn't see that against Missouri and I sure hope that we don't see another game like Missouri this weekend as well.

I know that supposedly next year is going to be better, but I actually expect us to regress a little.

We are losing both the offensive and defensive lines.

We will keep hearing the same reasons, we are young lack speed and quality depth, I expect to keep hearing that until year 3. That is when those excuses no longer becomes viable.

In year 5 the cupboard should be fully stocked with no more excuses.

I honestly hope we don't do something silly like sign an extension in year two.

I really like Butch Jones I really feel as if he has the program headed in the right direction. I hope that Butch Jones is our coach for the next 20 years.

I guess you could say I am butthurt as a fan, I am tired of hearing the same old line we lack SEC talent and quality depth. That may be the fact of the matter at the moment, I hope that Butch Jones's rights the ship because if he doesn't I fully believe that he is our last chance before we slip into the likes of Vandy and UK for a long long time.

I hope that before Butch Jones leaves that we are paying him more than Nick Saban, because that means he will be successful and at the end of the day.

Could be a blessing in disguise.

Good answers by all posters. At least the "want it now" lunatics haven't hijacked this thread---------yet.

Well I think most people believe in Butch Jones ... I remember how it was before Johnny Majors came to town.. And Phil Fulmer was able to build on JM to get a championship.. Now PF JM and every player who has played here at UT is behind Butch.. If all of those guys are behind Butch , well... he must be able to do the job.

Who said Year Zero -not me. I was talking about recruiting. He saved the day with the 2013 class, but he did not have the time to fill the class with players for his system. We are so far behind the upper tier of the SEC in overall team speed. We need more than just a few dbs and wrs. Our lines and lbs are flat out slow. This is not going to be fixed in one or two years.
We will not be back when we win 9 games a year. We will be back when kick Bama's butt.

It will be Missouri, part 2 this weekend. We don't match up well at all, and Auburn has a better defense. Will probably lose to Vandy as well, but this year was supposed to be a wash anyway.

true. I think we keep seeing overall improvements but the wins will move upward slower.

I'm going with two. That gives us the opportunity to develop needed depth.

Either way I'd kinda like my grandad to be alive when we are relevant again. It's sad that I'm wondering if my grandad will be alive when you guys say it should be 2 to 5 years when we are worth a s*** again.

Year three should be a decent year. 9 wins should be doable.

Year four we should be after championships.

Year 3. Next year will be a little better.

I think next year will be another building year. We are loosing a good line and experience on d... however we will have some exciting tallent to watch ... year after next will be a giant killing year and I think TN will knock off a giant or 2 . Then in 3 years they will be hard to beat by anybody...:peace2::peace2: just wait they will get there

Anywhere from 20 to 30 years. Probably closer to 30. Most of us will be dead before we win an away game again. If I can see a top 10 upset before I die I will pass away a blessed man.

IF we can get to 6 wins this year and have those extra practices, get our 14-15 EE here and with the rest of the recruiting class, I think next year we will have a better team. Georgia and SC lose their starting QB's, Missouri starts a lot seniors who will be gone and vandy and ky well are vandy and ky, I think we can compete for the east not saying we win it but compete.

Getting that sixth win and getting to a bowl is imperative for next years team. We will again have to rely on a bunch of Freshman next year but the talent level gets a whole lot better with this class.

IF he can continue to recruit in the top 5 for the next 2 classes (15-16) has a chance to get 9 or 10 wins in 2016. that will put Tennessee in the mix for the eastern division with about 4 other teams..

That's what people don't realize. When you look at the "average" ranking on Rivals, UT is 6th in the SEC. UT certainly has a great class coming in, but so do the other top tier SEC teams.

If it isn't his year and he isn't accountable for the actions on the field then why exactly are we paying him for this year?

I like Butch Jones and I really hope he is successfull and I sincerely expected about 6-6 this year and 6-6 next year. BUT he is accountable for this year. I have seen several great coaching aspects that Dooley flat out missed. (Think the emergency Time out call on the busted coverage against South Carolina). He has made strides towards improvement of the program and that does count for something. I don't expect to see us regress back to the Dooley ways of giving up in games and with the exception of one player that is what I saw offense do last week. I expect our players to be coached up and not to just play half heartedly.

My realistic expectations of Butch Jones are the following.

6-6 This year to me 5-7 is an unacceptable season.
6-6 next year the OOC schedule is easier and we replace the game against Oregon with much easier competition
8-4 in the third year
9-3 in the 4th year
By year 5 we should be competing for championships.

In 2015 we will start kicking azz, but in 2016 we really will be kicking a lot of azz, and in 17 well you know kicking azz.

At this time, there is absolutely no way to tell. Would love to see it in my lifetime, but not holding my breath.
