How many years will it take

Patience is a virtue. Honestly....everyone in the country knows Butch Jones defeated Mark Richt with a lesser talented but more physical team with coaching and effort...just didn't get the "W" for it and then went and defeated Steve Spurrier right after that. With that said...with a way less talented offensive team...what more do you want from the guy right now....honestly :dunno:

Again +1

I think next year will be another building year. We are loosing a good line and experience on d... however we will have some exciting tallent to watch ... year after next will be a giant killing year and I think TN will knock off a giant or 2 . Then in 3 years they will be hard to beat by anybody...:peace2::peace2: just wait they will get there

This is pretty much my thinking. I am hoping next year we will have a similar record to this year, but the losses will be closer. We might win one or two more. (Just too many young guys playing)

Then, in 2015, we will be competitive. If the SEC has a down year, we might make it to the top.

In 2016, Butch better have a contender. I doubt he gets much more time than this.

IF we can get to 6 wins this year and have those extra practices, get our 14-15 EE here and with the rest of the recruiting class, I think next year we will have a better team. Georgia and SC (and ALA) lose their starting QB's, Missouri starts a lot seniors who will be gone and vandy and ky well are vandy and ky, I think we can compete for the east not saying we win it but compete.

Getting that sixth win and getting to a bowl is imperative for next years team. We will again have to rely on a bunch of Freshman next year but the talent level gets a whole lot better with this class.

FYP...:hi:

Win 9 or 10 by Year 3 and show consistent improvement along the way or hit the road jack!

That is the standard we should demand as fans of Tennessee, a Top 10 all-time program. If we settle for less we'll get less.

If it isn't his year and he isn't accountable for the actions on the field then why exactly are we paying him for this year?

I like Butch Jones and I really hope he is successfull and I sincerely expected about 6-6 this year and 6-6 next year. BUT he is accountable for this year. I have seen several great coaching aspects that Dooley flat out missed. (Think the emergency Time out call on the busted coverage against South Carolina). He has made strides towards improvement of the program and that does count for something. I don't expect to see us regress back to the Dooley ways of giving up in games and with the exception of one player that is what I saw offense do last week. I expect our players to be coached up and not to just play half heartedly.

My realistic expectations of Butch Jones are the following.

6-6 This year to me 5-7 is an unacceptable season.
6-6 next year the OOC schedule is easier and we replace the game against Oregon with much easier competition
8-4 in the third year
9-3 in the 4th year
By year 5 we should be competing for championships.

I never said he was not accountable for the teams play on the field. You and I agree that it will take five years. I was simply pointing out that some of the players in the 2013 are not totally his recruits. And I do think it is right to honor scholarship offers from previous coaches. He salvaged the class with several players that fit his system, but we should see championship football when he has three full classes of his players.

it will probably take 5 years or more,to get back to where CPF had the Vols at,say what you want, his record speaks at what a great coach he is

when Dooley was hired, people said it would take him 5 years to get the Vols back,Hart put a stop to that, the last good defense the Vols had was under Wilcox and then weren't they told sorry no contact extensions over a year ? and then the Vols got a Bammer for DC

Hart has been forced into riding CBJ coat tails, because he couldn't get who he wanted,He backed into getting CBJ,which it looks like that CBJ is a good hire, time will tell

be patience,it is going to take time

I maybe wrong here but I believe the logic with the no contract extensions over a year had to do with the team playing the way they were.

The reason we ended up with Sunseri as a DC was basically everyone saw the train wreck that was this team under Dooley and wouldn't touch it.

However I believe this was a HUGE pay raise and a huge slingshot in the resume for Sunseri.

Ultimately Dooley made a HUGE mistake with that hire knowing that it was basically do or die time for him the third year and loaded with weapons was absolutely the wrong time to try to change defensive schemes especially when the 3-2 hadn't been recruited for.

Even with a bad defensive coordinator that maintained the 4-3 we had recruited for I think last year would have easily been 8-4 with a bowl and we would still be sitting here with Dooley at the helm. (If nothing else we surely wouldn't have been in a shootout with Troy or Akron can't remember which it was, and we probably wouldn't have lost to Mizzou last year either).

Ultimately I think we would be firing Dooley two years from now anyways as we just wouldn't have been able to keep the talent to compete, however the winning season would have probably bought him more time and god help us probably another costly contract extension.

It was pretty clear Fulmer left us in rough but recoverable shape. Kiffen threw the gasoline on the dumpster and Dooley set it ablaze.

Either way I'd kinda like my grandad to be alive when we are relevant again. It's sad that I'm wondering if my grandad will be alive when you guys say it should be 2 to 5 years when we are worth a s*** again.

Even if they aren't, I'm sure he enjoys every second he gets to spend with you. I miss fishing with my grandpa now that he's gone. I never realized just how special those moments were until he passed.

I hope I'm still alive... I don't expect another NC in my lifetime but another SEC Championship would be nice

I agree that it is the right thing to honor the scholarships. I liked what I saw when we played Georgia and South Carolina, those weren't his recruits either, the difference being they played with heart and discipline. I think back to the WKU game on the snap where NO ONE on the offensive line moved because WKU was off sides that showed good coaching and discipline.

Just like after South Carolina I think we are at a huge turning point in the season. The team rebounds and plays Auburn tough, and beats Vandy and Uk and goes bowling.

Or it goes the other direction and we come out flat against Auburn lose very badly, Lose to Vandy, and play flat against KY.

I think the difference will be in coaching, discipline, and heart.

Butch Jones may end up being the next Nick Saban but he can't teach these kids to have heart.

The 2014 class is so good that the rebuild is effectively one year ahead of schedule.

There should be noticeable improvement on the field next year, and a huge leap in 2015.

Most of the starters in 2015 will be guys from the 2014 class with a year of play under their belt.

By 2016, we'll be rolling just in time to dismantle Va Tech in front of 150,000 people.

You didn't sound that way at all. You just reminded me of how important grandparents are, and how much we mean to them.

Absolutely

We all may be all Vol For Life but memories of my time with my grandfather are way better than some football game.

He passed in 2009. I still miss him.

I miss him so much I tracked down his old boat spent $3,000 more than what it was worth and refurbed the whole thing.

Bama has 4 years of better recruiting classes now and will have a better recruiting class this year and you think 1 more year will put you in Bama's class, that's why fans like you keep getting disappointed year after year.

I don't believe that most people on here understand how very hard it is to recruit top talent when our team is getting their butts kicked around in the SEC.

Top ranked, winning teams have it much easier to recruit the best talent in the country and that's just a fact.

Many top players understand that they'll redshirt their 1st year and may not play much at all until their Junior year because the great talent and depth in front of them is so good so they'll be patient, learn and work hard so that when their turn comes they'll be totally ready to make a big impact.

Even though our next recruiting class is a legacy class I'm seriously amazed that bUTch and this staff have been able to convince such good players to come to Tennessee after we've been getting kicked atound in the SEC for a decade and these young kids don't even remember our glory days or know much about our traditions.

It's an amazing class we have coming in but NEVER forget that those kids will only be freshmen next season and most of the time freshmen and even most sophmores do NOT know everything and won't have much real game experience so it WILL take time to get them up to speed and with lots of real game experience under their belts.

In our current freshman class it's unreal that bUTch had so little time to try and recruit some serious playmakers that he really wanted but he pulled it off and added North, Dobbs and a few others that are learning as fast as they can and they're getting some playing time for real experience.

We already see improvements and game by game and year by year we should start seeing our roster and gameday depthchart getting better and better.

Some players don't even reach their potential and have serious breakout seasons until their Junior and Senior years despite how well they're coached and motivated so we have to learn to be patient with all our kids and keep supporting them and standing behind them until they finally get it.

Next season we're basically starting all over again on both lines where it really matters the most but when bUTch has 4 or 5 really good recruiting years we'll start catching up with bama and the other top teams in the nation with talent and solid SEC type starter depth so on gameday when we sub players in our play doesn't drop off because our 2nd team is starter quality players too.

Oregon and bama can take out all their starters and their backups are almost as good as their starters so they don't miss a beat and when our Vols have that many top players on our roster again we'll matchup with anyone in the country again.

In 3 more years we'll be feared again, in 4 years we'll be tough and ready to compete with most anyone and in 5 years we'll be looking for a SEC Championship and more.

The key is how well bUTch and his staff can keep recruiting because we are WAY far down on talent and depth compared to the top 10 teams in the country today.

Trying to learn to be patient is 1 of the hardest things to do in this instant gratification world we live in today but we all need to understand how far behind we really are and learn that it takes several years of great recruiting and coaching to get back in the top 10 and higher in college football.

It also hurts us alot when some of our best players leave early and run to the NFL for the $$$$.

Despite what happened the last game or what might happen in the next few games or next season we ARE back on the right track and finally have a good Head Coach that really knows football and how to rebuild a solid program.

Our glory days are far behind us BUT they are also finally again in front of us too.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

Butch better change his offense because it will never work in the SEC. Tennessee is a traditional prostyle offense program. Quarterback under center, fullback and running back. Power football not this panzy style offense he is running!

Not only is Butch responsible for the record 2 or 3 years from now, but he is also responsible for what the results are right now. He is ALWAYS responsible for meeting or exceeding reasonable expectations. Right now those expectations are to show noticeable improvement and competitiveness in the program and get us to a bowl game.

He has far exceeded expectations in recruiting to this point, and likewise in handling public relations. However, the results on the field have been a mixed bag. We have shown both some improvement at times (UGA and USC) and some regression at times (AL and MO). Right now we are in the midst of a significant slide in competitiveness. It's Butch's job to ensure that it gets fixed, and that we are at least competitive against Auburn, and that the reasonable season goal of a 6-6 finish and a bowl game is met. Anything less than this, is a subpar finish on the field for Butch and Co. and will be cause for increased scrutiny and accountability next season.

Despite what Phil used to say, there is no such thing as program "equity" !!! A successful minimum standard must be met at every single point in the process, and people must be held accountable every step of the way, not just for what happens 3 or 4 years from now.
