Disturbing Encounters: Former "Second Mile" Child

Beginning at 2:50

This now-grown man wasn't molested, but it certainly appears that he would have been if he had stayed.

This is an excellent intro into how sexual predators of children work --increasing physical contact, clinginess, providing access to privileges that other kids don't get. We're not talking about the guy in the van that slows down and grabs a kid; this is the friend/ neighbor/ youth leader/ family member who uses his access to a naive kid to get what he wants.

I would strongly advise watching this with your kids or grandkids who are old enough to understand it. (It's not gross on the face of it, other than realizing what this kid escaped.) They need to hear it from someone who experienced it. If I were still coaching AYSO and leading Girl Scout troups, we'd be watching it.

It can be very hard for pre-teens and young teens to know what to do in this situation, because they're often trying to be cool and with-it, and asking a parent or teacher for advice might not be what they want to do. But one thing that they do need to learn is to trust their instincts. If something feels creepy, get out. And then, once they're out, tell someone.
