California welfare cards can be used in many casino ATMs - latimes.com

Reporting from Sacramento —
California welfare recipients are able to use state-issued debit cards to withdraw cash on gaming floors in more than half of the casinos in the state, a Los Angeles Times review of records found.

The cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms, the review found.

I guess one positive is if they win big they won't need welfare anymore :good:

Ridiculous.

Glad to see it has not been a problem so far and that, to whatever extent it really has happened, they've shut it down.

trying to figure out how you know this

State officials said Wednesday they were working to determine how much money had been withdrawn from casino ATMs by people using the welfare debit cards.

lawgaytor, this is your fellow liberals. why should you act suprised?

What? Its a loophole in the system for distributing benefits. They've been told about it and are closing it. Let's not pretend its more than it is.

speaking of gambling - how was your luck in Vegas?

Leave Tuesday night. Golf and massage on Wednesday so it will be pretty much Wednesday night until I test out the luck.

Article said that they did not know the precise numbers but no one had noticed any sort of usage that caused alarm and would be a tiny fraction of it in any event.

Look, I'm not saying its good. A single dollar used for that is totally wasteful and fraudulent. I'm just saying let's not go overboard with images of droves of welfare recipients getting bused in to an Indian casino and running amuck with baby formula money.

i've seen people use food stamps to buy sushi at whole foods. lets not act like this isn't the tip of the iceberg.

the ability to withdraw cash with these cards is what confuses me. Also, how could they not be aware this was being done?

The casinos are listed on a Department of Social Services website that allows welfare recipients to search for addresses of ATMs where they can withdraw cash provided under the Temporary Aid for Needy Families program.

Oh I agree that there's plenty of fraud out there (although I suppose technically buying really expensive food would be more of a misuse than an actual fraud). I'm just saying that this one particular flaw in the system of distributing benefits doesn't seem like a frequently abused one.

I personally prefer when they buy 12 cases of coke and related products with it myself.

you don't think recipients frequently withdraw cash and use it for purposes other than what it was intended? Casinos or not, the abuse is there with this kind of system

Uh why are you even allowed to make cash withdraws from welfare cards? There goes any hope of a paper trail.
