What needs fixing is completely your call. But tell the forum how you would fix this country. Be as specific or short as you want to be. Want to rewrite the Constitution? Go for it. Just want more pie? Tell us what kind. Need to be dictator for a day? Go for it. Want your political enemies out of the equation? Tell us who.

The only changes I would make to the Constitution would be the repeal of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth amendments.
Beyond that, simply following the ninth and tenth Amendments would do the rest.
Culturally, breaking the teachers unions and making education all about basic knowledge instead of cultural and political indoctrination would be the biggest single change needed. Also eliminate any federal funding of any college that does commit to full observance of free speech and to viewpoint diversity.
And; the single biggest change needed? If we are going to have a federal income tax; don’t allow paycheck withholding. Make everyone write a single humongous check to the IRS every April 15th. Once Americans see just how much of their livelihood goes to supporting a bloated and unresponsive leviathan things would start to change

Dramatically and I mean dramatically! Shrink the size of the federal government. Restore as much power as I could back to the states. Educate the next generation continually that we are the united STATES of America. This fixes several things, but primarily it ensures that Californias crazy actually stays in California.

Bad ideas spread like cancer when the Feds have too much power. Those bad ideas tend stay isolated to one area when the Feds power is limited.

That definitely would help save us from a lot of misery.

I would just talk to the public directly like an adult about the real problems. I think people like adults. That's what I think. It seems like we are swimming in an ocean of stupidity and you don't really gain anything from the stupidity. Just tell people the truth.

This doesn't always work, of course, you have people going behind your back, maybe people who even think they're in the same party, making up a stupid stuff themselves and wielding real influence to get their stupid stuff into circulation.

1. Require sales receipts for the consumer to list the total cost of any Tariff on purchases. That would enlighten the customer and embarrass the sellers, maybe enough to bring mfg home.
2. Eliminate income taxes and go to sales taxes. Exempt essentials such as food and school supplies. That forces consumers to decide - Do I really need $200 sneakers, $500 purses.
3. Eliminate tax on Social Security. Already been taxed once.
4. Make SS optional - BUT the person must be enrolled in an alternate retirement savings program.

OSHA (Actually the entire Dept of Labor)
EPA

ATF
Housing and Urban Development

Seriously reform the entire Dept of Justice.

Repeal the 16th, 17th and replace the 14th amendment with birthright citizenship requiring 1 parent be a citizen. (I'd ideally do away with birthright citizenship all together but) Amend article III, limit federal judges to 12 year terms with an up or out clause.

Pass an amendment limiting congress to no more than 100 calendar days in session per year (outside of a declared national emergency), reduce pay accordingly and end all pension and HC benefits for them.

I gots more but have to go to a meeting.

We don't need to rewrite the Constitution. It's a pretty damn impressive governing document.

We just need to actually enforce the 10th Amendment. It would naturally set up 50 different experimental governance strategies instead of trying to force a one size fits all on the country. You would get interesting mixes of traditional Democrat and Republican ideas in various states with a natural feedback loop of real-world data about the effectiveness of policies rather than pontificating about how policies might work in theory.

some of mine will build on previous, or even be slightly contradictory/not complimentary in case I can't get something else.

1. Representative elections like Maine and Nebraska have. If a candidate wins that district, they get those votes, regardless of how the state popular vote ends up. it gets more people involved and keeps candidates from ignoring certain states.
2. Enforced budget. Constitutional Amendment that we must have a balanced budget over a fixed ten year period. Congressional members can set a budget that is more than projected income for a given year, but doing so triggers an emergency reelection for those who vote for it. Each bill must come with a proposed budget, and must explain how it fits into the budget. if it can not, it doesn't get voted on. the ten year period would be to allow for disasters or war. If a given ten year period ends with a deficit ALL politicians, and bureaucrats over a certain level are fired, and no longer eligible to work at that level of government again. no government expenditure is considered sacred or not tracked as part of this.
2a. There would need to be a phase out plan, but time it up with that 2 year House votes to clean everyone out.
2b. if there is a deficit at the end of the 10 year period, the next period comes with a mandatory austerity, regardless of ongoing war or disaster. that caps spending at a level that would pay off the deficit within the next 10 year period.
2c. the first thing cut during austerity is ALL foreign aid.
3. line item voting and vetoing and judicial review.
4. all politicians and bureaucrats over a certain level, must live in government housing, and can only be eat, drink, and receive things provided by the government. Government pay is tied to the average pay for a full time employee. at the end of each term every qualifying individual receives a mandatory audit where their financials are checked against their income to see if they made too much money. failing that audit makes them ineligible for future roles.
5. elections start 2 weeks after Tax Day
5a. I wouldn't mind a pure consumption based tax as the only tax. this makes sure everyone pays their fair share, while giving people a chance to save without being punished. there can be different rates for different items. basic necessities are more or less tax free, while luxury items get taxed at higher amounts. this would remove tax day.
5b. No more tax withholdings. Every single American has to write a check themselves. You can still make payments as you go, but you have to account for those taxes out of your pay. Feel the Bern!
6. Cut back drastically on the number of agencies. some examples would be DHS being folded into the FBI, NSA folded into the CIA. ATF pretty much disbanded.
6a. Streamline what those agencies do. If a division or employee doesn't DIRECTLY contribute to the STATED goal of that agency they are fired. The IRS doesn't need guns. the DOD only needs to focus on purely military matters.
7. Any military action (overseas) requires express Congressional approval. deployments over a certain size, budget number, or period of years, requires a formal declaration of war.
8. Give every foreign nation, or group, we have any type military agreement with a one time chance to back out of the treaty/agreement with. Completely redefine who we see as "essential" on a world stage for a firm line in the sand, have a set number of "partner" nations we have some limited but defined agreements with, then everyone else we stay the heck away from militarily. including aid.
9. No foreign defined plan/strategy/treaty will ever be allowed to influence our politics. Things like the Paris Accords, and the UN in general. We can choose to mimic those actions, but we will not formally sign onto any such agreements that impact anything outside the US.
9a. Think Globally, Act "Locally". This is not a full rejection of the global market practice, but instead a restructuring of how we do business. identity key areas (food, energy, military) that must be either made here in the US, or one of those few partner nations from #8. This could be a key driver in the "green" concerns as well. going cheap pretty much guarantees its not good for the environment. I would probably consider some higher consumption tax rates for goods that aren't manufactured to the same green/safety considerations as we have in the US.
10. at the state level push for "Self Defense" Abortion Rights.
11. Rework the justice system.
11a. End all private prisons.
11b. End jail time for non-violent, no victim crimes. drugs mostly.
11c. Completely restore rights after completion of a sentence, sentence can include a probation period outside of prison. but once its complete, its complete, full rights restored.
12. Rework immigration
12a. jail time for anyone who hires illegals, including higher ups.
12b. give people already here a streamlined path they must begin by a certain date for the "grandfathered" cases.
12c. birthright citizenship requires that both parents are here legally at the time of birth.
12d. Asylum only granted for directly neighboring nations, or they have to prove the conditions still exist in the intervening nations.
12e. exponentially increase the number of judges handling immigration cases, and increase the number of places you can "pre-apply" to enter the country. tie that pre-apply to biometrics of the individual so they can't be stolen, and if the paper work is lost on the way, the biometrics can be checked at the border to check status. the border should not be where you start your paperwork, unless applying for asylum under the above conditions. and the government inefficiency should not be the bottleneck.
12f. no limit on total number of immigrants, if you can meet whatever requirements (not that high), and do the proper system you are welcome here.
12g. breaking a law from 11b, or immigration laws including not approved entry, would make one ineligible for entry and immediate deportation.
13. rework social programs, including food/housing/healthcare to require mandatory participation in efforts to reduce dependency. Homeless and need food? we will give shelter and food, but you are also put into a jobs program. need healthcare, guess what you have to prove you were making good faith attempts to address the issue. If you have some issues due to being overweight, your food allotment is decreased.
13a. drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and the 11b crimes, would make someone ineligible for welfare. welfare is not a right.
13b. I would consider some type of "resettlement" programs to get poor/homeless into "government" towns with set jobs and housing, food, and income. maybe a 5 year period total, include rehabilitation for addictions. I don't see this as prison, but a fully functioning town isolated but self supporting to a large degree. I would like to see all levels of education offered, including community college level that offers 2 year 'degrees' that focus on needed jobs.
14. in the complete rework of the agencies I would drastically decrease manager's pay, and look to increase the workers pay.
14a. specifically in schools. the admins pay is set by the teachers pay.
14b. offer age specific world religion classes, but otherwise keep religion out of schools.
15. college loans can be dismissed by bankruptcies.
15a. college loans interest rates are variable based on the job placement rates. you get a degree in a field that is hiring, your interest rates are low. They aren't hiring, its a higher rate. have those rates posted.
16. Ban lawyers, and pharma from advertising like most of the developed world.
17. insurance companies must all be non profits. same with pharma. insurance plans are fixed and can not be modified by provider only.
18. right to privacy enforced. make companies selling/leaking personal information a punishable crime. companies must protect that data to some level as well.
19. end robo calls, spam calls, political calls. punishable by jail time. this goes for emails, texts, and any other form of personal communication.
20. Right to repair/maintain enforced. no longer MUST the end user agree to terms and conditions to even use a product they bought, no subscription plans for bought/physical/tangible assets. Companies must offer two variants the current version at current prices, then a "protected" version where the customer pays more for the same product but doesn't have the terms and conditions or other requirements to purchase and use. this creates monopolies that drastically limit consumers options and privacy issues.
21. protect the manufacturers, use of a product as designed/intended, they can not be sued for a product working correctly. if people are dumb enough to buy and use lawn darts its no fault of the company using them that their kid loses an eye.
22. completely rework immunity for cops. not sure on the specifics, but if they act in accordance with their training, they are protected, if they don't they can be personally held responsible for their actions.

1. Eliminate the NFA 1934.
2. Overhaul the immigration system from top to bottom.
3. Term limits apply to all in the legislative branch.
4. Eliminate several departments of the federal government. DHS, ATF, DoEducation. etc.
5. Overhaul the VA from top to bottom
6. Strictly limit international / foreign aid.

Why repeal the 17th?
Because Senators should be the voices of the state legislatures under a federal system, not yet another popular vote contest. The country is the United STATES, a compact between 50 sovereign states. The states are the actual components that make up the nation, not merely administrative districts of the federal government. It is the same principle that girds the electoral college

Elon Musk recently said in a speech that there are 450 government agencies at the federal level. 450. He challenged people to even name 100 of them without looking them up. I bet most folks cannot get past 20 or 30 honestly from memory. Heres the thing: the people that work at all of those agencies have to do something to "justify" their existence. Thats bureaucracy in a nutshell. Countless government agencies full of unelected people on the public dole (with better insurance, dental, retirements, more days off and vacation etc than 99.9% of people who don't work for the .gov) It is absolutely ridiculous, our country will be just fine and even function better without 2/3 of them at least and all of their "red tape". Try to build a project, get a government contract to do literally anything etc and you will find out quickly just how many agencies you have to deal with...how each is terribly run and inefficient, how much needless paperwork and approvals are involved, how totally ignorant and unprofessional the gov employees are etc etc. Its an absolute nightmare, always, and yet we have just been conditioned to believe that this is the way things work and its "normal". It isnt. Even better is when you invest lots of your time and money into a project, bid for contract etc....only to learn that you never stood a chance at all because of backroom deals with bribes, quid pro quo, or DEI type bullcrap meant that only an LLC with a minority woman listed as owner was ever gonna be even considered for that contract, or allowed to build a project on that land.

Musk likened our current condition with 450 agencies trying to interfere in commerce and every other aspect of life to a football game. The agencies are the refs. You need a couple refs on the field to make sure the game is played by the rules, that both teams have an equal chance with 11 players on each team and 3 or 4 officials. What we have now is 200 officials (agencies) spread all over the field, such that neither team can even run their plays. The whole game is paralyzed, because nobody can move 6 feet in any direction without running into another needless "official". What makes it even worse is that in addition to ruining everything, we are the ones actually paying for all those "officials" and everyone who works for them. Pay with benefits 99% of people will never have like pensions, full medical and dental for the whole family,401ks with matching contributions, and in many cases retirement begins fully vested after only 20 years. Nobody in the private sector gets all those benefits that I know. Literally nobody. Yet all the government employees do, which only further encourages growth of these completely unnecessary agencies, because people really want those easy jobs with unheard of benefits and generally next to zero oversight or requirements to actually turn a profit or accomplish anything at all. Its absolute insanity. I am all for taking care of people in the military, policemen, especially school teachers etc. The people who are truly necessary and benefit society. We need to 86 about 2/3 of the government agencies and employees though overall. As much taxes as those of us who do actually work for a living have taken from us....our much smaller government should have a surplus every year, and the discussions and legislation should ve about what infrastructure most urgently needs to be repaired or built with the excess in order to make life better for citizens.

NPR and PBS need to go too. They made sense when everything was broadcast over the airwaves but now with the internet and streaming media; they are just a money pit.
There is a place for non commercial radio but it doesn’t require government assistance. I continue to listen to and contribute to WSMC 90.5 in Collegedale. They dropped out of NPR ages ago but continue to provide really great programming just based on membership. And they are free of the constant NPR “news” propaganda.
Please consider contributing as well if you like classical music. They are available streaming even if you don’t reside in SE Tennessee

This is a really good list. Pretty sure I support 100% of these, as I currently understand them anyway. A couple of these strike me as common sense/obvious...but are never discussed much. Like for-profit prisons, better wages for teachers and less for admin positions (that could actually reduce in number by 2/3 as well in public school systems) greatly reducing foreign entanglement, foreign aid $$$, and military bases and activity around the world. We are worse than poor right now as a country, we are deeply in debt and hemorrhaging cash by the trillions. We dont need hundreds and hundreds of bases all over the world in 2024 to guarantee our safety in the US. We have satellites that can read golfballs from space. We have nuclear subs beneath the waves armed with Trident missiles and each sub has enough nuclear warheads to destroy every major city in Europe (+/- 30 per sub). Our 3 pronged nuclear deterrent is enough to keep anyone from ever attacking us, and our satellites, spy planes, and intel agencies are enough to keep us informed with whats going on everywhere on Earth. Bring our soldiers, sailors etc home and educate them in trades such that they can have a good transition into civilian life. Stop giving away billions and billions of dollars...especially to those who hate us. Did you know that we currently give the Taliban over $50MM every month? To terrorize the Hell out of everyone in the Stan with the over $1BN worth of weapons and equipment we left behind. The leaders who OK'd and arranged this nonsense should be flogged on the National Mall for all the world to see. Its that damn ridiculous, and a slap in the face to any American wounded or killed there in a pointless war waged for profit by the MIC and their stooges that we elected.

Because Senators should be the voices of the state legislatures under a federal system, not yet another popular vote contest. The country is the United STATES, a compact between 50 sovereign states. The states are the actual components that make up the nation, not merely administrative districts of the federal government. It is the same principle that girds the electoral college
I think people miss this entirely. We are a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. Democratizing and democratizing is what has contributed greatly to the shitshow we are in, because an immoral people will always vote for themselves. We have to limit that damage.

No line item veto. Baaaaaad idea

Not really. I shudder to think of how a democrat administration would abuse the line item veto. It undermines Congress’s most powerful check on the administration; the power of the purse

Would like to hear why yall think this is a good or bad idea. I know 1 thing thats objectively true: trillion dollar, 3000 page omnibus spending bills and "you have to pass it to read it, because the finished product was just given to legislators 24hrs before the vote" is complete 100% BS and people should have been publicly caned or had old-school duels for ever trying this BS right at the deadline the very 1st time it happened. The Dems want to make this the new norm every time they have a majority. Reagan Republican traitors vote right along with them, too.

I am not saying "line item veto" is definitely a good idea, thats why I asked for opinions. I think we should all be able to agree that needless "pork" smuggled into these bills...that have nothing whatsoever to do with the name, nor intent of the bill...are complete garbage. They are a big part of why we are trillions in debt. If the L.I.V. process is not the best way to get rid of this bullcrap, then what is? There are hundreds of billions of dollars in US taxpayers money wasted on absolute bullcrap in each of the last 2 spending bills passed by Congress. How do we stop it? A simple Google search regarding what kind of ridiculous nonsense was funded in Bidens "Inflation Reduction Act" will and should absolutely piss you off. Something has got to change.

What we need is a rule or amendment that does away with omnibus spending bills. I very program or department needs to be voted on separately

I've been pretty happy not to have to shoot past three dozen of EL's mindless re-tweets to get to something worth reading here; I took that as proof the country was fixed..
