The article also mentions this:
“The all-time American high school field goal record of 68 yards was set in 1985.”

Anybody remember who that (brief) former Tennessee Vol was?

Dirk Borgogone - was the answer from my Michigan friend who cheated and looked it up.
Ding, ding, ding!
Yes, we were excited to get the #1 kicker in the nation that year and who would presumably replace Fuad Reveiz. (I graduated HS and entered college that same year.) Of course, he transferred out after a year.

"Borgognone's college career, however, was derailed by a 1988 change to the NCAA rule books that banned kicking off tees for field goal attempts. This not only reduced the general range for field goals (the record off a tee was 67 yards, without, only 65), but Borgognone had always kicked off a tee and was unprepared for the rule change. Borgognone left college early, to pursue an NFL career as a kickoff specialist."

"Borgognone struggled to make the National Football League. He spent years bouncing between NFL training camps, mainly as a kickoff specialist (the NFL had prohibited the use of kicking tees for field goals and extra points for a decade). "

This dude has the US record for longest kick in 23 high school football but no division 1 offers. Can someone please send a good word to Coach Heupel? Kicker Who Destroyed Wyoming Record With 61-Yard Field Goal Also Leads Nation

That's a really nice kick! However, Cheyenne Wyoming is at 6,062 ft which is obviously higher than Denver's mile high (5280 for those who don't know).

FGs sail longer at elevation, but I would say that 61-yard kick is good for 55 yards at Neyland.

should drive on over to Avon/Vail. And have ye a couple o'pints. Then! When all world is watching, try to kick a fg. Would be a great social experiment.

We used to always be in the running to get the player considered the top kicker and punters in high school. That seemed to have changed after Fulmer was let go.
