How big of a loss Trae Golden was. Although he wasn't the best on defense, he was a decent scorer and passer, and really helped our offense flow better. He played his best ball during our strong runs to close the first 2 years. This year, lack of consistent point guard play has contributed majorly to the disappointing season.

Edit: this isn't an excuse for CCM's subpar coaching job this season. Just offering another idea to explain some of our inexplicable struggles this year.

I got sick of taking up for Golden. I thought the kid played his heart out and hated seeing him go

Some players are good but just inconsistent by nature. It's weird

he doesn't make other players or his team better. He should be coming off the bench for some instant offense at the 2, but as a pg, leader, ball in his hands player, his teams just underperform with him leading them. Simple as that.
I understand why people liked him. I try to keep emotion out and look at how a team performs, just like you do at the qb position. Consistency. Trae has been benched by GT this year as well.

TrAe could have a game like this, then go for 20 the next night.

so what. Could get benched twice like he did last year. Who cares about 20 from pg with Stokes, Mcrae, jrich and maymon on the floor. Talk about standing around and watching.

I agree. But at the same time, he's been forced to play the point. When he was here, I thought he was our best option ans tried hard. Ppl would moan and complain but he's not naturally a point guard. I never understood why folks faulted him for that.

I think Trae tended to be an asset for us about 3/4 of games. One out of every several games though he would have an off night and he didn't pass very well when he wasn't scoring. On those days he just hurt our offense.

I would take my chances with Golden. You know what you going to get with Thompson/Barton, maybe 5 to 10 points combined.

Should've gotten the hometown kid Dre Mathieu instead of Barton. He's havin a good year for Minnesota and is a natural pg

I love that kid's game. This has been discussed before but his game isn't the same at UT. Pitino has the ball in the pg's hands 90% of the time on the offensive end and we get it out of their hands asap. Everytime down. People get on Barton and DT for underperforming, and they both could have played a lot better, but I repeat, when you walk over halfcourt, give it up and run to the opposite corner, it sucks as a pg, and Matthieu's talents would be going to waste, as others are.

This...all day long. The discussion shouldn't be Trae v. Barton/Thompson. It should be why Martin hasn't been able to recruit a true PG until year 4? Just a steady PG would have been better for this team. But it's not like the PG has to make many transition passes in this offense.

we only needed @ 8-10 pts, 6 assts out of our 2 pg's with this particular team. Stokes and McRae fight over the ball already. Can you imagine if Trae is out there trying to launch all the time as well?
Basically the same team as Trae had last year. Add maymon, which is basically a rebounder, and subtract Skylar, and it's basically the same team

This is not meant for arguments sake, but an honest question....what do you think Martin sold Larry Austin on to sign with Tennessee? He's one of the better pure PGs in the 2014 class.

pg doesn't do anything in this offense except give the ball up as soon as he can.

Can't explain how tough it is to get into rhythm and play ball with that plan. It's not an excuse for Barton or anybody. They have to get past it and play despite their coaching.

You're wrong.

This kid is having a monster year and is a true point guard. It was a huge miss. Monday morning quarter backing but - we have some very bad talent on our bench and we pass on this guy? What do our coaches do well? Floor coach - no, talent evaluation - no, motivators - no,
good substitutions - no, good recruiters - no.

Nice guys - yes. Well we do have that going for us.

I never thought of it that way but I see what ya mean. I've watched a few minne games this year and I like the way pitinos team plays. With that said I really hope we bring back pearl ha

I have no idea. Maybe same thing he sold Barton on. I don't think Barton came here to walk it up, pass it, then go stand in a corner. Not shocked at all that his offense has struggled.

Martin announced after the game Barton is the starter barring injury for the rest of the season, I like the move.

Get your seniors out there and maybe they finally start to play with some fire down the stretch run.

If Pearl wasn't realistic, Pitino would be my guy. He knows the SEC being with Donovan, and even with limited head coaching experience, I think he could excel in the mediocre conference.

I got tired of reading the Jenny Wright jokes on here. "Trae can really take it to the hole. Just ask Jenny Wright!" :eek:lol: Sure, we could use him and he was great in that Texas A&M OT road win last year but I have a feeling our record would be about the same. We are just an NIT team under Zo.
