I don't understand the worry about recruiting. Look at our results the past few years. Obviously recruiting didn't equal wins. This is my analogy: If you are in a race and have the "best" car but lose to a "slower" car, does it really matter that you had the "best" car? Our ultimate goal is to win games not recruiting titles. If the recruits don't understand that, IMO we didn't want them on the team anyway.

Ok, wanna do the car analogy? Obviously you need a good driver to drive the car(coach), but if you have a good driver with a slow car(bad recruiting), then you aren't gonna win anyways. Our new coach has to do both recruiting and developing talent along with a winning scheme. But what do I know about winning? You are the one rocking the guy who won the election on your avatar. :moon2:

Yea, you are right..........I mean look at all of the key games and championships we have won with the great recruiting in the past decade?????? Look I am not busting Fulmer's chops but what we were doing obviously was NOT working. Our program has been in steady decline as of late. We had to do something.

I said nothing defending fulmer or our performance on the field. I agree that we needed a change, but you are down-playing the importance of recruiting. We need a coach that is really good with his scheme, but just as important is recruiting. This is especially true at UTK where we have to go out-of-area to recruit due to our lack of home talent. Recruiting like this takes skill.

I am not downplaying that recruiting good equals playing good, the facts are. They are as follows:
Texas Tech recent recruiting results per rivals:
2008-45
2007-52
2006-25
2005-37
2004-33
Five class average.....38.4
Current BCS ranking......#2

Tennessee recent recruiting results per rivals:
2008-35
2007-3
2006-23
2005-4
2004-11
Five class average.....15.2
Current BCS ranking......

This speaks to the coaches more than the difference in recruiting IMO. Texas Tech is a phenomena too because they recruit offense like mad but thier defense is the reason that they haven't been able to break through until this year. Put them in the SEC and they have at least 2 losses right now. If you want to compare UT to another team then do so in the SEC. In the SEC you have to have offense AND defense. I said you need recruiting AND A GOOD COACH. I did not say that since we had one and not the other that we should be good. :mega_shok:

I agree that good recruiting and good coaching are a must for sustained success. I just get tired of hearing that we should have kept Fulmer because he recruits well. I agree that he recruits well. I also have lost the excitement that used to come with a good class because we have performed poorly with good classes recently. To put it simply, I would rather be competitive with sub par classes and good coaching than to not be competitive with good classes and sub par coaching.

I am more concerned with getting a good coach first. Then I might worry about whether the current recruits stay or not. If they stay, great. If not, Chiao Chico. Next....

Please somone has finally said a coach that will develop players. And maybe play them in the right position and maybe just maybe if they were real talented play on both sides of the ball i know we don' have a Charles Woodson or a Champ Bailey or do we maybe the new guy will use him on both sides of the ball.It seemed like he was a real good QB in HS shame we r all too stupid to expect this great athlete to do too much.Thank God for Eric Berry it is a shame Fulmer never could figure out how to use him correctly.

when you guys land a coach who is young and WANTS to rebuild your program, you will get the recruits back...UT will be back, no question with the atmosphere and facilities...this is just a bump in the road

Thanks for posting the recruiting average data... I personally believe it will be awhile before a coach is able to recruit at UT like Fulmer has done. I've even said never again less P.Manning takes over; but this kind of stat makes me feel a whole lot better IF we get his offensive coaching staff along with him.

I think that a coach could come into UT and be ranked in the top 30 in recruiting on average if he could hang around long enough to have an average score.

Keep Chavis & D staff to make fans happy and bring this guy in a package deal. UT buys out all of their contracts and brings the whole dang offensive coaching group.
