We've all felt a downward spiral coming...but it may be close to an all out free fall soon...

Think about the last four classes we've had...

2005: top 5 class...but how many of those guys that got us that high ranking turned into flops? Henderson, Shelley, Mathis, Rawls, Cox, Coker, Myers

2006: Not in the top 30

2007: Nice class...hopefully it will keep producing

2008: Not in the top 30

I hate to say the sky is falling but if this keeps up then teams will start "out-talenting" us just like we used to do to everyone else back in the day....

We won't have to worry about in-game coaching or player development...teams will just line up and blow us off the ball in every facet of the game

I'm not willing to be that negative yet. Let's see what the new coaches and players do in the upcoming season. Not willing to call this until they lay their cards out.

We finished #23 in 2006. Per Rivals......

Okay...my bad on that one...

We were still substantially outrecruited by the best teams in the SEC that year...which is something we will also be able to say about this year...

If a team is substantially bigger, stronger, faster than the team they line up against then they are going to beat that team at least 7-8 out of 10 times....

People have cmplained about coaching and player development at UT and said that talent is the only thing that has kept us near the top for a long time now...

Well now we aren't getting that talent...so what does that mean for us?

Agree, last years class was about as good as you could hope for. It will have to carry us for the next couple of years. If next years class is par with this one we should start to worry. Until then we should be able to compete with anyone. Probably won't win every big game against a rival, but we can compete nontheless.

Future doesn't look to bright. It doesn't really matter though. Even when we were tops in recruiting you never saw anyone until their Jr or Sr. Year.

Plus, how are you going to talk about not developing players when we have a whole new offensive staff? These news coaches might do a great job at developing talent.

All things considered this year could be worse. All new staff, two horrendous losses on national TV to big time rivals, and even worse stupidity by 4 or 5 players at the absolutely worse possible time imaginable besides prep week for the NC. Yea I am just ready to get this recruiting season over and start playing ball.

1 top 20 class every three years isn't going to cut it, especially when we seldom "coach anyone up".

We have too much tradition and fan base to keep making excuses for Phil. Teams in the SEC are in the top 5 National rankings every year and they keep getting better and better talent. We make excuses like "We dont need the top QB in the nation or we already have great WR's." Im getting pissed as hell with Phil. The only reason he is still there "IMO" is to recruit. He cant coach worth a damn if you ask me and he isnt doing his job.

I hope they can develope talent, because they didnt do to much in their short time with the recruiting. I know they didnt have long but h3ll alot of teams had staff rollovers and it didnt seem to hurt them to much. These low ranked classes want begin to show-up until 3 or4 years down the road, thats when they hurt you. When depth becomes a problem then you have big problems. The real problem is even in the top 5 classes alot of these guys will not pan out, but it gives you some leeway to fall back on some lower ranked players. But when you sign a class thats already ranked low and alot of those guys dont pan out then you really dont have much to fall back on. Everybody seems to think that 1 big class we had last year will carry us for years-WRONG- you are only as good as your 2nd and 3rd strings- DEPTH- is where these classes will hurt us in the future.

We lost too many good players from our own state to consider this class good. When more of our top players sign with Alabama than us and we do not pull any of their top state players, it is pretty bad.

Who cares where they're from if they can play. And I would hardly count a player from Memphis as an easier get.

Everybody keeps bitching about depth, yet 3 JUCO recruits are coming in next year on the DL.

Im not bitching about depth or number pf players. Im bitching about the level of talent. If Alabama can get these guys we should be able to also.

Who are you refering to as 3 DL?
Sykes, Corey Hall, Rufus Williams....

If so, I didn't think it is a given these guys will make it. I heard they have one more year in order to get their academics in order. If you have more info, please share. This would be refreshing news and I would agree, that would solve our problem, or at least help in a major way.

I've yet to see a football game won solely on where Rivals and Scout ranked their recruiting classes.

The class of 2009 will have Williams, Hall and Sykes in it. If they don't get their grades up, they will not play anywere.

Yeah...but we lost out on a lot of guys we were pushing to get this year - that is the sign of a losing recruiting class. It isn't only the fact that the avg. stars are down ...
