QB- It's going to be one "helluva" quarterback battle this spring as CBJ puts it.
1a. Dobbs (if he can get "coached up" on passing and progress off of the Kentucky game, he should be the front runner due to his added running ability and 4.5 games of experience. Definitely has the potential. Everything depends on how he develops this offseason)
1b. Ferguson (called "the purest passer", maybe has the skill and talent that has been missing in the passing attack this year. A lot of unknown among the 4, but also the biggest upside with it. An Elite 11 participant and undefeated HS QB. Could have the arm talent of Bray or Ainge)
2. Toss up. Worley definitely was the most reliable for this team and we should never have questioned Butch's decision on it. It really showed towards the end of the season. If he can improve and develop, Worley can definitely be a contender for the starting job.
Peterman may some bad notoriety on a poor debut performance, but it is unfair to judge him based on his first start being against a then healthy Florida Defense in the Swamp with an injured thumb. He has just as a good of an opportunity as the other 3 for the job.
Runningbacks - The Hurd is the word
1. 5* 5* 5* Jalen Hurd is the headline of the 2014 recruiting class and for good reason. A major factor for helping assemble the current recruiting class. Coming in at 6'3" 230, with a 4.3 40, Hurd is going to be a bruising North-South back. As a Junior he rushed for 3,357 yds in a single season, 394 yards in the state championship game along 7 tds in that same game. All of those are Tennessee state records. Definitely underrated, partly due to his early season injury but will show everyone once he dons the orange and white!
2. Marlin Lane - As a senior, Lane will have a lot to play for. Although he will split carries with Hurd, he will play a bigger role than he has in the past 3 years on Rocky Top. He has always had a good running style, loving contact and always running physically. Lane's signature is his vision/cutting ability and physical falling forward running style. Needs to work on speed to be a more complete back, but will definitely help complement Hurd and help UT establish a respected running game for the first time in years.
