QB- It's going to be one "helluva" quarterback battle this spring as CBJ puts it.

1a. Dobbs (if he can get "coached up" on passing and progress off of the Kentucky game, he should be the front runner due to his added running ability and 4.5 games of experience. Definitely has the potential. Everything depends on how he develops this offseason)

1b. Ferguson (called "the purest passer", maybe has the skill and talent that has been missing in the passing attack this year. A lot of unknown among the 4, but also the biggest upside with it. An Elite 11 participant and undefeated HS QB. Could have the arm talent of Bray or Ainge)

2. Toss up. Worley definitely was the most reliable for this team and we should never have questioned Butch's decision on it. It really showed towards the end of the season. If he can improve and develop, Worley can definitely be a contender for the starting job.
Peterman may some bad notoriety on a poor debut performance, but it is unfair to judge him based on his first start being against a then healthy Florida Defense in the Swamp with an injured thumb. He has just as a good of an opportunity as the other 3 for the job.

Runningbacks - The Hurd is the word

1. 5* 5* 5* Jalen Hurd is the headline of the 2014 recruiting class and for good reason. A major factor for helping assemble the current recruiting class. Coming in at 6'3" 230, with a 4.3 40, Hurd is going to be a bruising North-South back. As a Junior he rushed for 3,357 yds in a single season, 394 yards in the state championship game along 7 tds in that same game. All of those are Tennessee state records. Definitely underrated, partly due to his early season injury but will show everyone once he dons the orange and white!

2. Marlin Lane - As a senior, Lane will have a lot to play for. Although he will split carries with Hurd, he will play a bigger role than he has in the past 3 years on Rocky Top. He has always had a good running style, loving contact and always running physically. Lane's signature is his vision/cutting ability and physical falling forward running style. Needs to work on speed to be a more complete back, but will definitely help complement Hurd and help UT establish a respected running game for the first time in years.

I don't see Hurd starting over Lane to begin the season. Maybe later on.

I also don't see how anyone can rank the qbs. We saw Peterman play a half, we didn't see Ferguson at all, and what we saw from Dobbs was completely inconsistent. I think at this point, you hope that Ferguson is all-world, or you hope that Peterman is better than what he played against Florida.

I like Dobbs as a solid backup right now. Worley can help himself out this offseason by doing some speed training and improving his accuracy.

I see no way of ranking the qbs. I want to see these guys play in the spring after an offseason of development. It should be fun to watch.

If Lane still hesitates while running the ball this spring you can bank on Hurd being the star tailback that CBJ will build this offense around for the future.

Lane hesitates? Or are you thinking of Neal? Lane is north/south with great vision. He just doesn't have elite top speed.

Lane was patient, but not hesitant. I thought he was very solid this year; always slicing through tight gaps, making the right cuts, and fighting for extra yards. He didn't break anything huge, but he consistently pushed the pile for extra yards. Just check his season YPC average: 5.3. That is very efficient.

I think Lane will be the guy at RB and Ferguson at QB. People get excited about the newcomers a little too much and forget that some aren't ready or have experienced players in their spot more ready and capable initially. Hurd will be a good one, though. He just has a solid (better than Neal) player in front of him who's a senior. It's a good thing to have, unlike many a number of other positions. Our secondary will be a interesting endeavor, next year, hopefully, not a scary one.

I'm also looking forward to the day we don't have to bother with these annoying cliches and slogans, like "team 117" and "brick by brick", and just play ball. Soon, I hope.

So you've seen Ferguson play? What on Earth makes you think he'll be the starter?

A little, not much, but I have heard from some people that Ferguson is the guy who the coaches are highest on of the 4.

I have seen a lot of film of Ferguson. He is a winner with a great arm, but most importantly, he doesn't get rattled. He reminds me of Favre. I think that confidence is what the QBs lacked this year.

Whomever wins the QB spot will have so many more targets next year. No one is mentioning Jenkins, but people were talking about him along with North early on, before his injury. Jenkins, North back, Pearson, Booth being an EE, Helm, Wolfe, hopefully Malone...these guys are going to provide just what the QB needs.

Hurd could easily be the sort of back that Gurley was for Georgia or Jamal Lewis as a true freshman. I like Lane, but those types of back come along only every once in a while.
