Butch Jones loves to drop numbers from the offseason periods, and the Vols again have some impressive improvements.
Jones joined 104.5 The Zone in Nashville to talk about the offseason workouts, which have a great name.
“We call them, ‘The Standard periods,’” Jones said. “It’s the standard and expectation with which we’re going to play football and give effort and intensity. They’re called, ‘The Standard periods.’ They’re part of the offseason program. We mix it up at all different times (of the day).”
Jones says the team, so far this offseason, has lost 207 pounds of fat and gained 359 pounds of muscle. At this point last season, no one on the team could squat at least 600 pounds. Right now, nine players can.
But the offseason isn’t only about physical workouts. Every coach will publicly say they like how their team is progressing, but it’s not always the case. It’s important teams improve more than just physically.
“Everyone’s optimistic at this point in time, but reality sets in,” Jones said. “We went through that last year at this time. Our strength wasn’t where it needed to be as a football program. A lot of coaches, it’s a great measuring stick where you’re at as a football program, especially when you come in and take over.
“Not just your strength and conditioning is born in the offseason, but also the mentality of your football team, the work ethic, the team-building, the accountability to each other. Every Wednesday, we have speakers come in from across the country. Tony Dungy will be in. We talk about life. It’s part of our character-development program. It’s not just about getting bigger, stronger and faster, but the overall mentality of your football team, as well.”

Sounds like they are working hard and not just checking it saying they did it. Good to see the coach keeping up with his players.

I'm pretty sure he said similar things last year in the off-season. It gives fans hope during the long off-season. Nothing wrong with that.

I believe that CBJ is the one that told the players everyday they are competing against Bama and the other teams. When we're lifting they're lifting. It's who works harder. This group is buying in and if they continue to do so we get back the glory deals.

Remember....he changed that to the "red team." :ermm::eek:lol::no:

How dare you praise Coach Jones, you scoundrel. Everyone knows that Top 5 class was a fluke and that his 4 conference championships in 6 years were achieved against practically high school competition. He and "the best staff in America" have not proven ANYTHING at the D1 level!

I fear thy tongue is firmly entrenched in thy cheek. Please do not allow it to break through.

I like to see that he is using firm numbers about fat loss and muscle gain - when everyone on the team knows that their individual performance in the weight room and the dinner table literally affect the whole team's numbers, it helps build a team mentality.

This dude is amazing! Just think about it he was our third option for a coach. A lot of us including me never heard of coach Jones and he he is winning the off season which will translate to wins on the field. I know this saying is over used, but Butch Jones gets it! Go Vols!
