So I was talking with my family and saw somebody mention it here but is Nico the first Freshman starting QB to ever beat Bama and Florida in the same year??

So far I have gone back to 1980 and haven’t seen it happen. I think Hendon Hooker then Clausen were the last two to beat them both in the same year, but he they weren’t freshman.

Can anyone else help me figure out this stat or who was the first to do it?

Thank you in advance Vol Nation! Great win today. I love yall.

As a freshman is what I’m looking for. Sorry I was referencing the pre-Heupel era. I should have clarified. But I was looking up QBs by year. And since HH wasn’t a freshman I skipped past him.

Clausen, before HH and Nico, was the last to do it.

I’m sure that he’s the first freshman QB to do it, as not a lot of QBs have started as freshman for Tennessee. Ainge played most of the snaps against UF in 2004, but Schaeffer started. Had Clausen started in 2000 instead of AJ Suggs, he probably would have accomplished it, but that’s a whole other discussion.

He is not a true freshman; he is academic sophomore and a Redshirt Freshman football eligibility wise.

While we are at it, someone asked me today about when the last time that both Tennessee and Vanderbilt beat Alabama in the same season. Anyone know that one?
This might be the first time ever actually. I’m gonna google that now too.

He’s a freshman none the less. On the record books it typically shows Freshman (RS). I’m willing to take either Freshman or Freshman (RS).

That’s the info I’m looking for. Thank you tho!

I saw that as well. When I was looking up his starting games I forgot he didn’t start that game. I was also 10 at the time so it makes sense I didn’t remember.
