Tom Hiddleston To Play Country Icon Hank Williams, And Will Sing As Well

EXCLUSIVE: The Avengers star Tom Hiddleston will play Country & Western legend Hank Williams in I Saw The Light, a film that Marc Abraham will direct and which has come together as a co-production between RatPac Entertainment, Bron Studios, and Creative Wealth Media Finance, all of which will fund the film. Abraham wrote the script based on the Colin Escott biography of Williams and Aaron L. Gilbert will produce with Brett Ratner, G. Marq Rosell and Abraham. Ratner’s partner, James Packer, will be exec producer.

Production will begin in Louisiana in October, and Hiddleston will sing such Williams standards as “Your Cheatin’ Heart”, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Hey Good Lookin’,” after the film’s backers made a deal with Sony ATV to secure rights to the Williams music catalog. The film will tell the story of Williams’ meteoric rise to fame, and the price that fame took on his personal life. He died at age 29 of heart failure.

The British actor has starred in projects as diverse as Midnight In Paris and War Horse, but his starmaking role has been playing Thor’s evil adopted brother Loki in two Thor films and The Avengers. He’s currently shooting the Guillermo del Toro-directed Crimson Peak for Legendary Pictures and Universal. Hamilton Hodell, WME, Authentic and Peikoff Mahan Law Office rep him.

Elizabeth Olsen Joins Tom Hiddleston In Hank Williams Biopic ‘I Saw The Light’

Elizabeth Olsen has joined the cast of RatPac Entertainment and Bron Studios’ I Saw The Light, the film about the life of country western singer Hank Williams. Deadline’s Mike Fleming broke the news this summer that Tom Hiddleston nabbed the Williams role and will be singing classics like “Your Cheatin’ Heart”, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Hey Good Lookin'”. Olsen will play Williams’ wife Audrey Mae. Marc Abraham is directing from his own script about Williams’ meteoric rise to fame, and the price that fame took on his personal life. He died at age 29 of heart failure.

Sony Pictures Classics has released the first look at Tom Hiddleston as country music legend Hank Williams in the upcoming biopic I Saw the Light.

The image shows a clean-cut Hiddleston (no Loki hair or Avengers intergalactic garb here) wearing a cowboy hat and dressed in a suit and tie.

I Saw the Light will follow Williams’ rise to fame and tragic personal life, which ended with his death at age 29 from heart failure after battling alcoholism, prescription drug abuse and back problems.

Elizabeth Olsen costars as Williams’ wife, Audra Mae, and the cast also includes Cherry Jones, Bradley Whitford, Maddie Hasson, and Wren Schmidt.

The film, written and directed by Marc Abraham, is named for Williams’ 1948 song of the same name and based on the 1994 book Hank Williams: The Biography. It opens in limited release on Nov. 27, and will go nationwide after that.

Not a huge country fan but I respect the greats like Hank and Cash. Never knew he checked out so early at 29...

This is getting crushed by critics. Saying that Hiddleston does a good job but can't save a terrible job by the writer/director.

This movie may end up stinking but Tom Hiddleston does a pretty good job with the singing from what I have seen!
