on VolQuest. A very nice analysis of Tennessee top 10 players that were signed in past years. really shows top level talent in this state.

Tennessee top-10 of recent years, 2003-2006. Who knows about the 07 and 08 classes how they will turn out. And I didn't dig into the lower rated sleepers that may have turned out to be nice players.

2003
Daniel Brooks, Vince Redd, Adarius Bowman, Steven Jones, Chris Russell, Quintin Williams, Joe Sanders, Kenyon Buford, Taron Henry, Fred Sparkman.

Of those 10, only 1 guy (Bowman) can be considered even a decent CFB player, and that was after drug run-ins. I remember the panic over letting such wild "studs" like Vince Redd and Chris Russell get out-of-state. As it turns out, top-10 is a complete failure for 2003

2004
Demonte Bolden, David Holbert, Corey Mills, Antonio Heffner, Joseph Doss, Lavonte Barber, Tom Santi, greg Smith, Kevin Mainord, Elix Wilson.

The only guys even remotely worth a damn are projected starters for our 2008 defense. Again, how did the program surivive while letting so many future 1st round draft picks get out-of-state?

2005
Patrick Turner, Michael Oher, LaMarcus Coker, Malcolm Rawls, Todd Cox, Jeff Cottam, Ayanga Okpokowuk, Dan Williams, Marsalous Johnson

Oher makes one genuinely very good player to leave the State thus far.

2006
Brandon Warren, Jacques McClendon, Mike Berry, Craig Cooper, Tremaybe Coger, Duke Calhoun, Lee Smith, Blake Garrettson, Dustin Lindsey, Cecil Frison.

Best 2 are in Knoxville. Berry and Cooper could prove to be solid.

Even generously giving the benefit, this is a total of 1 very good player and 3 solid player in four years that have left the State.

Of the 15 guys TN signed, I would say 6 have at least been okay - McClendon, Cottam, Dan Williams, Mars Johnson, Bolden, Elix Wilson. 9 complete busts/non-contributors for one reason or another. Warren is limbo, obviously.

So I ask you - is this a State worth spending much time recruiting, at least for allegedly top-end talent? Looking at these numbers, is this a goldmine of football ability?

It is certainly not a hotbed. Like all recruits it is a hit or miss proposition for the most part. Wrapping up the top three to five always looks good for the program.

Given the fact that Tennessee has no national reputation whatsoever for high school football, a few fans feel like it shouldn't be so difficult to sign the handful of standouts in the state.

I would say that Tom Santi was a pretty good player for UVA.

When Tennessee becomes a priority for us in recruiting more so than Florida, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, and California, then and only then will I be concerned about losing prospects to the likes of Notre Shame. Our three most dynamic play makers from last year were from Georgia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. I am extremely proud of Dennis Rogan for him to do what he did last year as a 3* prospect. Also, this year's pool of talent isn't that deep with Marlon Brown being the only TN player in the Top 100 on Rivals. I would consider him the highest priority of in-state talent to land other than Eric Gordon. I would venture to say Gordon lands in the Top 75 on Rivals before the season is over.

The only two in recent memory that I can think of that we missed on were Josh Bullocks and Patrick Willis but I dont think either were top 10 in state at the time.
