LightSquared: Did White House Pressure General Shelton to Help Donor? - The Daily Beast

According to officials familiar with the situation, Shelton’s prepared testimony was leaked in advance to the company. And the White House asked the general to alter the testimony to add two points: that the general supported the White House policy to add more broadband for commercial use; and that the Pentagon would try to resolve the questions around LightSquared with testing in just 90 days. Shelton chafed at the intervention, which seemed to soften the Pentagon’s position and might be viewed as helping the company as it tries to get the project launched, officials said.

LightSquared: Second Witness Rejects White House Testimony ?Guidance? - The Daily Beast

A second government official has come forward saying the White House tried to influence his testimony concerning a wireless broadband project backed by a Democratic donor that military officials fear might impair sensitive satellite navigation systems.

Anthony Russo, director of the National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing, told The Daily Beast he rejected “guidance” from the White House’s Office of Budget and Management suggesting he tell Congress that the government’s concerns about the project by the firm LightSquared could be resolved in 90 days, a timetable favorable to the company’s plans.
----------

Harold Furchtgott-Roth, a former FCC commissioner, said it was highly unusual to put a timeline on the kinds of technical tests discussed in the OMB paragraph.

Roth goes on to point out even more irregularities.

Been getting a lot of emails from our surveying GPS distributor about this. Don't know much about the WH and such (other than the articles), but it sounds like they have not tested much in regards to what issue will come up with this. Our people are saying it could screw up the precision GPS systems. Which would really screw us up.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me think we're nuts for trusting that expansive foreign policy is in our best interest. We're lied to by the military in conjunction with the president's wishes. Blatantly.

LightSquared Promises Tech Fix To 'Save' GPS | Fox News

Here's a bit more detail on the spillover, both from the GPS systems currently in place, and then also from the network proposed by LightSquared.

Whether you believe the Republicans, who say that the White House is trying to help out campaign donors, or the Democrats, who say that the Republicans are intentionally inaccurately seizing on this in order to create a false political issue, if I understand the underlying problem is is something that will inevitably have to be dealt with because of increased demand on the limited bandwidth in the satellite system.

That is, whichever side is playing politics (its probably both) this is something that has to get fixed down the road one way or the other.

I haven't kept up with the political angle at all. The guys we are talking to are going back and forth to DC for meetings and have been for weeks. LS is catching heck right now for some shady testing that says everything should be fine on our end. The guys I am talking to are saying there is no way they would know given their testing.

All I know is if it does what my guys say it could, it will screw up an entire industry and bleed over into commercial and residential construction.

Not to mention we just spent 25k on a brand new precision GPS unit that would be nothing better than a boat anchor if they are right.
