Let me preface this with the following; I HAVE NEVER BET ON A FOOTBALL GAME, EVER. Okay, now that that's out of the way, has anyone ever bet AGAINST the Vols? Or is this a blasphemous query on its face?

I always bet against them. That way if Tennessee covers, Im happy with the W, and if they lose I have something to ease the pain. Much rather the Vols get the win and I'm throwing money away.

1990 Bama game. A co-worker (not a fan of either team) thought I was being silly for having any doubts about the outcome. We were 4-0-2 (back when ties were a thing) and ranked #3 nationally. Bama was 2-3 and unranked. We were a big favorite. But I had seen us lose to Bama when we were the better team and I told him I felt like this was going to be a game where it happened again. I just had a feeling. He acted like he thought I didn't really believe what I was saying. So, as if to call my bluff, he challenged me to put my money where my mouth was.

I told him I would never bet against my Vols. We went back and forth and it was obvious that he thought it would be easy money for him if I took the bet. I think it was ten or twenty bucks, no big deal. After some continued harrassment from him, I started to think of the bet as some kind of cosmic insurance policy. And I told him that nothing would make me happier than to be wrong and lose the bet. He was still in a state of utter disbelief when he paid me on Monday morning. I was still pissed-off and the money was no consolation.

That was the one-and-only time.

I always bet against my team. As Jpcisco said, if the Vols win, life is great. If they lose, it least you win some money to dull the pain. Would much rather take the W, but if not might as well make lemonade with those lemons. One stipulation to this is you need to be the moneyline, especially when taking points. The absolute worst circumstance would be the Vols losing and you also lose the bet because they did not cover the spread. Double whammy, no good. That being said, lets friggin' go Big O!! Beat them Hogs!!

In 1993 I said if we could just beat the streak against Bama at Legionnaire's Disease Field, I would propose to my girlfriend. She & I watched it from the student section, me in orange and her in her home school colors (yuck). It was a tie, and she claimed that was a sign from God to tie the knot, so she declared victory.

We just celebrated 30 years of marriage. Thank you Heath Shuler.

ETA: Also, Bama later forfeited the game so it all worked out. Also also, screw you Deuce Palmer.
