Welp boys and girls, I think this team officially has an identity. Defense rules
With a guard oriented offense. The post play complements the outside game rather than creates an alternative attack. Setting screens and catching highlight film passes at the rim for easy 2s are what’s expected. Outside-in rather than inside-out.
The interior players need more pt and more touches. Simply passing it around the exterior and then jacking up a three is a recipe for games like Texas Tech. Look what Hunley Hatfield brings if he gets a few touches. Same with the other bigs. It's not rocket science - move the ball in and out and find the open man. We played ridiculously good defense and if you lapsed one time down the court - you are sitting next to Coach Barnes reflecting on the value of always playing tough D.
And some have argued that JJJ needs more time at the 4 with a 3/4 guard attack. None of the post players are a huge threat to score. With an elite player like Chandler the properly executed high post screens are all the more important.
BHH looks like he needs to up his intensity considerably. When he went for more than a couple of minutes he looked like he was quickly getting tired. He rarely takes a position near the basket with a defender on his back and fights for an entry pass. His game is still a lot of high school type of play where he’s the only physical freak on the floor. He also has a huge wingspan, but his hands are usually at his sides. He doesn’t look real comfortable setting picks. That might have been something he was rarely asked to do in high school.
ORN, Uros, and Fulk don’t look lost. Uros especially has improved considerably with that aspect. He’s getting several touches at the high post in the half court offense. Maybe Chandler is more effective with that contribution and the multiple screens set on every possession.
I think BHH starts taking some of ON’s minutes, as happened yesterday. ON had 18 minutes and BHH 16 minutes. Neither player is overly active and aggressive, but the upside to BHH is undoubtedly higher.Agree that Uros is moving much better - he does receive the ball and pass well keeping it moving and is a good screener but seems to pick up a foul or two a game in so doing - which is the same as a turnover, so there's that. I applaud his hustle - he clearly is trying to be valuable. Fulky, ORN, Hunley- Hatfield can all improve but need pt and touches. JJJ needs to develop some interior moves and shots - everything else he does down low is great. He is a great shot blocker and rebounder - to maximize his value he needs to be able to score inside and midrange. He elevates nicely on his shot so no reason not to be a weapon inside. All the interior guys are good to great passers - just need touches to keep everyone involved. We killed those guys today, but we just really have too many players rotating in and out - maybe the rotation changes some once conference play starts.

This team is simply the opposite of a traditional offensive attack. Hitting 3s should make the inside game, no matter if it’s Fulk, ORN, Uros, BHH, or JJJ, more effective. If 3s are going in the inside game won’t have opponents putting so many defenders in the paint. The 3s really aren’t being forced. Most are really good looks that just aren’t falling. IMO the ball movement on the perimeter has looked really good. Lots of extra passes and they’re making defenses chase the ball all over the half court. TN could make a deep NCAAT run this year if the rims are forgiving.
That’s the thing that upsets me about BHH.
He’s a talented player but he’s bad for taking plays off or not giving 100% effort.
Probably why he was in Barne’s dog house for a while.
The ball movement has been exceptional. In years past, stagnant ball movement, too much dribbling, etc has denied the chance to get even a decent shot, whether it be inside, mid-range, or the 3. Now, we’re getting more wide open looks than I’ve seen in a while. The whole idea has always been to take “good” shots only. Tennessee has tons of good shots now. Hitting those is the key, obviously. This team is simply the opposite of a traditional offensive attack.
