Paramount wanted Bill Murray to play Forrest Gump but Murray turned down the role thinking it would flop. How do you think he would have done?

Hard to say. But that movie is arguably one of Tom Hanks' best performances. I couldn't imagine anyone else beating that.

Also, if anyone knows who Dave Chappelle is...he was supposed to play the part of John Coffee in The Green Mile but turned it down. Just thought I'd mention that since it's another TH movie.

I can't imagine it. Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump is just one of those legendary characters that can't be replaced.

I know, great movie. It still gets quoted anytime someone takes off at a full sprint lol.

I read the book a few years before the movie, and it is more incredibly different than any movie, book I've ever seen, watched.

If Murray had taken the role, it would have been 2 1/2 hours of Carl the groundskeeper. I like Murray, but Hanks dominated that role.

Murray can play dramatic, see Lost in Translation and Groundhog Day.

the Gump character requires pause and heart, and Tom Hanks knocked it completely out of the park. I think that performance will stand the test of time as one of the greatest ever.

I would like to see some documentation that Murray was offered that role before Hanks. I call BS

Chris Farley as the Cable Guy, Fatty Arbuckle, and Shrek. It was supposed to happen.

John Travolta was offered the role before Murray was and was the first choice.

And IMO, Forest Gump is one of those movies where you just can't imagine anyone else being the lead than the person who was. Tom Hanks as Forest Gump just fits.

John Travolta would have been horrible.

My favorite hypothetical is "what if John McClain had been played by Richard Gere?" like they originally planned.
