If Coker Starts

The TD against Florida was a trick play so it isn't like it involved him making a great run. If you take away his 89 yd. TD he would have finished with 7 carries for 57 yards. That is an average of 8.14 yds. per carry. It is good, but not great.

8.14 is not a great per carry average? I am not arguing he could sustain this or that it was done over an extended period. But I would consider 8 yards a carry great.

I have no problem with you getting your hopes up. I hope you are right. It is certainly possible. If he gets a crease against the players on Memphis' defense he can take it all the way. I have a feeling though that Memphis will be playing defense "not to lose" much like Air Force. When the defense drops 5 guys into middle-to-deep zone coverage it is hard to break a long run.

True, I would rather him do it on the Bulldogs, Tide, and Tigers.

UTC Memphis
1st Downs 12 22
Total Yards 249 427
Passing 111 328
Rushing 138 99
Penalties 6-69 4-35
3rd Down Conversions 3-11 5-12
4th Down Conversions 0-1 1-1
Turnovers 1 2
Possession 29:14 30:46

I know this little misleading, because Tommy West fired the defensive coordinator on Monday, but these stats represent the game between UTC Mocs and Memphis, so if any of our backs start and the offensive holds, which I think they will we might have 200 yards rushing or more
I mean little old UTC got 138!!! GO VOLS

If he runs hard every play, and isn't forced down in the backfield by a grasping DE, he will have shown more than we've seen since Arian limped away from the field of play.

Run hard. Results will follow.

He has 19 carries for I think 199 yards this year... that's not only 8.14 yards per carry, but 10.5.

Ummmmm ... 8.14/carry is AMAZING. It's not possible to carry that for 25 carries a game for 12 games, but to say its good not great is absurd. 5yds/carry is great.

Not for only 7 carries when one of those was a 20+ yard run. If he averages 8.14 yards per carry and carries the ball 20-25 times then it is great.

Great backs will break those 20+ yard runs, and that is what obviously raises the YPC. You already took his 89-yard TD run out of his stats, and now you're taking out the 20+ yard run??? Give Coker some credit.

if a back is avg. 3.4 yards a carry you can give him the ball all game and not be stopped.

3.4 x 3= 10.2

Anything above 3.5 is the goods.

If we can get a back to average 3.5 yds a carry, and our QB/WR keep up there pace, we might be able to win out. 3.5 yards a carry is great!!!

To add some sanity to this discussion, 8.14 yards per carry is phenomenal. 5.0 yards per carry or higher is great in college football. 4.5-4.9 yards per carry is really good in college football. 4.0-4.49 yards per carry is good in college football. Anything below 4.0 yards per carry is NOT GOOD at any level of football. What are you guys thinking saying that 3.5 yards per carry is great??? 3.5 yards per carry helps you find your way to the bench!!! UT is currently averaging 3.8 yards per carry on the season, and that sucks!

All of these figures are immediately lowered once players enter the NFL, where the defenses are far better than in college football. However, even at the pro level a running back needs to be at 4.0 yards per carry.
