If I told you at the first of the year……

…..that we would beat Florida and Bama, be 10-2 at end of the regular season, and make the playoff - be honest, would you have taken that and been happy ?

I know I would have.

It's Heupel's 4th season, it's ok to expect us to have a good chance to beat an Alabama in their first year under a new coach, and a Florida entering the season on the verge of firing their coach, especially when both games are in Neyland.

10-2 is a good season with the roster returning. Many thought NC ST and Oklahoma would be toss up games.

However, if I told you that back in 1998 that we would not win another SEC championship in the next 27 years…and counting……

We definitely did better than I expected. The problem is how we've lost the games we lost. The team flat out didn't show up for Arkansas or OSU. We need to play complete games. Not come out flat and then try to flip a switch and dig out of a hole every game.

The answer to your question as asked would be yes. However you omitted to ask about ending the season by getting embarrased and humiliated in the playoffs. If you added that to your question I would have definitely declined and reply that I would be VERY unhappy with the season - because I expected us to look good and actually do something in the playoffs. But this is where we are again at the end of another disappointing season - Heupel can't seem to win big games on the road ever since he got here. With the exception of that LSU game with Hooker on the team few years ago we have pretty much sucked in every other meaningful road game against good teams. Usually sucked on both offense and defense by the way so it's not just the assistants that are at fault - it's Heupel as well becasue we all know offense is his baby.

Agreed. It was a solid season. Especially with a redshirt freshman QB.

I also think we all would’ve agreed Ohio St had the best roster in the game.

Amen on 2004. If Ainge hadn’t gotten hurt before halftime against ND…… No offense to Rick, but we’d have at least won the SEC that year. It’s a largely forgotten team (seemingly). Last one to beat Bama, Florida, and Georgia in the same season.
2022 was better than this. So was 2004. They just didn’t have 12 team playoffs back then.

I know this is coming from an outsiders perspective and yesterdays game was not the way Vols fans wanted the season to end, but Tennessee is very fortunate to have such a fanatic fanbase and very, very good team. Out of about 135 colleges, only eight are still playing. Still looking forward to getting to my first game at Neyland in 2025.
Go Vols !

Thank God you aren’t either then. This season was a very successful season.
If you accept the terrible discipline, getting clobbered by the good teams (GA and OSU) beating some weak name teams OU, AL), and racking up stats on the weak OOC teams, you’re destined to be a mediocre program. It’s not for me.

I would hope my VOLS aspire to elite and not accept this as a “good season”. I’m not a fan of the win-is-is-a-win-no-matter-how-ugly mentality.

I love them. I hope they won’t settle.

This team didn't play a complete game all season. That's disappointing and also an indication of poor coaching and player leadership. If championships are the standard Vols wont be winning any under the current circumstances. Be interesting to see if any changes are made bc several need to take place.
