the short-passing game. How can we get 5-10 yards on first down with a pass or misdirection? First down is CRUCIAL for every offense--but especially one like ours that doesn't have a lot of playmakers and doesn't have a great defense and so /desperately/ needs to make first downs. We want to run the ball, and well, but you can't just run it on first down every series. Doesn't work--defense is expecting it. This hurt us against Oregon. So how to make 5 + yards otherwise? More passes to TE--I say, again, put Croom at TE. More passes to slot or backs. A bit of misdirection maybe.

In the Oregon game, we were behind in 2nd quarter 17-7 but put a little drive together that gave us the ball 1st and 10 on the Oregon 45. Big point in the game. We score there and the game is, at the least, competitive for a while longer. On first down, Worley throws a deep pass--pretty well covered and incomplete. Not the best OC call or Worley decision in that situation. Two more incompletions (They blitz, Worley rushed) and the drive stalls. Minutes later it is 24-7 and the rout is on.

What one thing would you focus on this week?

I would focus on ways to get the tight end involved, guys like Woody Quinn who could create a major matchup issue for defense and allow passing plays that would be short yardage and move the sticks.

Their defense will have crowd the line of scrimmage and bring the secondary up. Throwing short passes, either over the middle or in the flanks, will result in at least 3 interceptions. Depending on the defense they show, throw the ball on first down with deep curls, deep slants, or fly patterns. When the defense loosens up, run some draws and sprint options.

If I were coach the 1 thing I would focus on this week would be not listening to all the armchair coaches that have popped up telling me what they would do. :)

Honestly, I would focus on punting the ball OB (35+ yards down the field) and kicking the ball through the endzone on kick-offs!

With UT's sh&tty return teams I can see a scenario where UF returns a kick on Sat to swing momentum. Don't give them the chance.

i remember that exact play. the receiver had no one within 10 yards. worley missed the easy pass that wouldve put us at first and goal. im not a worley fan but the decision was right. he just lacks the physical ability to get it there. and i agree this was a turning point 17 14 with momentum/confidence is much worse than 24-7 with none.

I'd focus on first downs and keeping the chain moving. Our D obviously got blown out last week but when the game was closer, and possibly still in the balance, our O couldn't stay on the field due to bad throws and soft play calling, IMO. We need more physical play from our supposedly great O line and we need to be able to complete short to medium passes to get first downs. It moves the ball down the field and lets our defense get a rest.

That seems to happen a lot vs the gators. That and lazy passes out in the flat going for a pick six.

We had better worry about how to cover the middle of the field. My 7 year old could have hit the TE last week with the cushion we gave them.

We need to get the chains moving before we get on third down. With the inconsistency of the QB, you can't have multiple 3-4 yd plays when one of the three 3-4 yd plays goes incomplete or is stuffed - then you punt.

We need some big plays, problem is we have zero big playmakers.

This. Thankfully, Brandon James is long gone. However, our coverage team blows chunks as a result of no speed whatsoever.

Dang, and Freak just got that text to speech app fixed for the coaches headsets!
