West Virginia is much like East Tennessee. Its history is that it seceded from Virginia when Virginia seceded from the Union, just like East Tennessee attempted to secede from Tennessee when Tennessee seceded from the Union.

East Tennesseans have always been fiercely independent Appalachian mountain people, pioneering spirits that don't want government telling them what to do. West Virginians are the same.

No way Tennessee, with all of our resources, facilities, donors, & fan base, need to be looking at unproven mid-major coaches or assistants or unemployed guys to fill their head coaching jobs. That's what we've done with our recent hires in all of our major sports, including Kiffin, Dooley, Raleigh, Peterson, Green, Houston, O'Neill, DeVoe, and even Fulmer & Pearl.

Instead, how would we have done worse by hiring the last successful coaches from West Virginia, a major school albeit one that has a smaller budget & fan base to work with, & that also has inferior facilities to ours. We should've hired Rich Rod long before Fulmer, who we kept too long, was fired. He turned down Bama & was a poor fit at Michigan but would've been perfect at UT.

Also, Beilein would've been a better hire than Peterson. However, despite his profane nature & his health issues, I'd hire a guy that is the same age as Beilein, at age 58, to be UT's next head coach. Bob Huggins is one of the Top 10 coaches in America. He's on his 2nd stint at his alma mater. He would come to UT for the opportunity to coach in the SEC & to match wits with his friend Calipari twice or 3 times a year if we paid him enough.

Besides that, Huggins packs arenas. His sometimes acerbic comments bring in the fans. He would keep the swagger going that Pearl has started. He would keep the string of NCAA tournament appearances up. He's been to the Big Dance 14 of the last 15 years he's coached at Cincy & WVU. He would be tops on my short list if we fire Pearl.

My first choice is to keep Pearl. If he gets fired, I'd hire Huggins Monday.

Why would he want to come here? He has it made at WVU.. Big East, A Final 4 last year, and a good recruiting class. Not bashing on you, just wouldn't make sense.

he left morgantown once for cincinnati. for the right deal, he'd leave again to come to knoxville. heck, he even coached at k-state, too, just a few short seasons ago.

huggy bear will retire at his alma mater, sorry

I really wish people would do some research before posting things like this. Huggins played at WVU and, sorry, WVU has way more basketball tradition than we do (and it goes back a long way to guys like West and Hundley). Huggins is not leaving his alma mater to come here.

Do not want Huggins. Hire some young coach who can recruit and wants to be here.

I think the AD at TN needs to be the one packing his bags.. they will never replace Pearl with his enthusiasm and high intensity when coaching.. even ESPN guys comment on what a great coach he is, do TN fans know a good coach when they got one  Fans need to be protesting at UT campus for Coach Pearl! Now there's something I could get into!

He coached K-State for one season and left when the WVU job came open. In fact, he had a special provision in his K-State contract that would allow him to leave for one school. In case you can't guess it, it was his alma mater, WVU. He is there to stay.

Those pesky, pesky facts. It doesn't hurt one to know them before posting inaccuracies.

I hope this is a joke...

Lack of institutional control, multiple major violations, horrible graduation rates and a DUI don't sound much better than what we are currently dealing with. Might as well add Kelvin Sampson to your short list. I think his show cause is up in a year or so...

Well get ready because if Pearl is gone that is exactly what We are going to end up with.

Passed through it on the way from Akron.

I think hiring a coach based on his residence's status during the Civil War is, in itself, a marvelous idea.
Given my family's unique connection to West Virginia, I think I should get a parade for staying in Knoxville, but for some detours.

Sure Huggs is decent but HE IS NOT COMING TO UT. First it's his alma mater. Second, it's a higher level basketball program than Tennessee.
