Old news, all of it. Some additional commentary and rhetoric, but nothing new on that front, either.

Envy is a cruel mistress.

Scott isn't a Tennessee guy, I know that much about him, so it's not like he has an orange axe to grind. I just thought it was interesting that someone else was saying a LOT worse than CLK was going on about...

Chad Scott is a blowhard muckraker. If its not Meyer, he's going after 'bama or Saban or FSU or somebody. He's trying to make a name for himself by being controversial.

Lane is a coach who at least arguably should be earning his stripes on the field, not by spouting off in stream-of-consciousness at an alumni breakfast.

The two men are in entirely different positions and if you would prefer to compare them to one another, I wish you the best of luck.

I LIVE in the Atlanta area and this is the first I've heard of him...I just thought it was interesting that someone outside the UT "family" was saying essentially the same thing Kiffin said (and got pounced on for) apparently (see reference to Tuberville) weeks or months before Kiffin even said it. That being said, I will grant you that the two are in different stratospheres and as much as I appreciate CLK's gravitas, some production on the field beforehand would be nice...

There are literally hundreds of people, writers, commentators, what have you, trying to make a buck off of criticizing Meyer and Saban and Richt and Miles and anyone else successful in the SEC.

There is a ready market out there from fans of, oh, I'd say about 10 schools (the rest of the SEC, FSU, and Miami) many of whom get their jollies on being proven right in their hope (not objective assessment, but hope) that the guy running the other team (Gators) is a nasty scoundrel.

It sells papers and books, gets hits on internet boards to sell advertising, and helps people as they try to elbow their way into the crowded radio sportscaster/commentator market.

I remember a guy on the radio several years ago who predicted Arizona State to beat Nebraska (back in the day when they were on top), and when it actually happened he bragged about being a "stinkin' GENIUS" for literally years afterward...so yeah, I suppose you're right. If Kiffin has the kind of success that Meyer has accomplished folks will be banging on him just as hard...

He's a coach in the SEC that hasn't taken the field a single time, he sort of already stepped in it once, and you see the criticism he's taking already. Imagine what will happen if he wins some games he's not supposed to. Folks will be coming after him, big time.

I got to agree with Lawgator. If Kiffin has success over the next few years, he will quickly become the target of pieces like this. It has to to do with envy of success, more than anything.

Correct. Please understand that I am not saying that Meyer has not engaged in some recruiting tactics that are marginal. He may well have done so. But I doubt he has done much worse, if any, than anyone else at this level and its only because he is successful that there is such a market of people eager to read the "cheater" spin or characterization that journalist wanna-be's will attach to Meyer.

That's propbably one of the reasons UF and the SEC jumped on Kiffin so much. In context of where he was and what he was doing, Kiffin was just further feeding that already pretty big feeding frenzy and the reaction form UF, and the SEC, was to put the kibosh on it before it got out of control.

With a couple of weeks now in our rearview mirror on it, that was doubtless the right thing to do.

Roger that... Like him or not, Mike Slive has done yeoman's work in trying to quell the SEC's reputation as a confederation of scofflaws.

As far as being in the "gray areas" of NCAA regulation... To be able to negotiate those areas while staying out of the doghouse is the hallmark of a really good coach in my opinion. As far as CLK's comments I think he definitely stepped out of line, was corrected and hopefully has learned a lesson about how things are done here as opposed to the Pac-10 which is apparently much more lax about these sort of occurrences.
