What happened? What breed?

German Shepherd.

Long story short, in July 2012 one of the families that lived in base housing brought in a stray dog. She was emaciated and had been abused, not by that family in particular, but by someone. Being that the shelter wouldn't come out for several days and the temperatures were going to be over 100 during that time, I volunteered to take her to the local pound myself.

After arriving, they took one look at her and said "she's beyond saving and nobody will adopt her. We'll probably put her down today and put her out of her misery." Oh, we'll just see how far beyond saving she truly is I said to myself as I took her back and headed straight for my vet. They gave her a look and said "it might be too late for her and she might not last a week."

We'll just see about that...

So I got the high protein moist dog food, a bag of the good dry food and told her she was going to make it. There was an immediate bond between us since I had already fed her once and she seemed to trust me. I had a long road ahead of me though.

She was starved and attacked the plate each and every time I put it on the floor. And if I made a sudden move around her, she would wince like I was about to hit her. She had scars from unknown injuries in the past and was entirely distrustful of most people. She wasn't aggressive with them, but didn't go out of her way to make friends either. There were a few rough patches, but slowly and surely we worked together to bring her back to the proper health.

As I write this, she's on the bed beside me (where she's not really supposed to be) on her back waiting for a belly scratch. She's healthy, maybe a tad plumper than she should be, but content. She loves kids and loves meeting new people, is very possessive of her toys and has never had to go through any hardships since she's been with me. I named her Tara after the Buddhist figure of mercy and compassion which I felt was fitting.
