Referees almost always take heat after sporting events, but Saturday's officials didn't do themselves any favors.

The crew caused an extended delay early in the second quarter after giving Hawaii five downs on one series: a 9-yard completion, an incompletion, a run for no gain, another incompletion and then a punt on what would have technically been fifth-and-1.

The officials reviewed the play for more than 22 minutes, moved the ball back to the line of scrimmage from which the Warriors had punted and then eventually moved it back to where the Bulldogs' returner had called for a fair catch.

Both coaches were noticeably frustrated throughout the ordeal.

"I still don't have an explanation," Dykes said. "I thought it was bad for everybody. I'd like to sit here and say it was only bad for us, but — I mean, it's bad for football ... The whole thing was a joke, but that had nothing to do with the way we played tonight."

The officials also moved the chains ahead on a second-half Tech drive when it had not yet earned a first down, and some confusion around the opening coin toss resulted in Hawaii receiving the kickoffs to start both halves.

How hard can this be?

They couldnt even count. Hawaii getting 5 downs, trying to short tech a down, and once the ref moved the ball 4 yards on an offside penalty. They took 22 minutes when reviewing the 5th down, announced the decision, and then promptly reversed that decision once the Hawaii coach got in their ear about it.

Late in the game a tech player ran over a ref while going out of bounds. This resulted in the loudest cheers from the crowd for the whole night. The refs literally sprinted off the field as soon as the game was over.

You'd think that the opposing coach would get pissed about the kickoff at the very least and not even send his team to line up for it...

Has the kickoff thing been explained? There are legit reasons that could happen, but I'd love to have confirmation that it was just stupidity.

The kickoff problem was a mistake by the tech captain. Hawaii won and deferred the decision to the second half. The tech captain didn't know the rules and chose to kick the first half. Most refs would explain that before letting a team make that mistake, but these weren't most refs. Heck I doubt they knew the rules either.

I don't blame the refs for that one, then. Coaches should explain to their captains what to select depending on the flip. You either get to choose in the first half or the second. No matter when you choose, you choose to receive. It's not that hard.
