What kind of coaching changes would you make. As of right now, I would fire Randy Sanders and name Trooper Taylor new OC along with naming David Cutcliffe Qbs coach. I would also get ride of Jimmy Ray Stephens and get somebody in as a special teams coach.

Well, having just completed a coaching search at my job, I guess I have a little insight into this.

I would interview the following coaches...

Offensive Coordinator:
1) Sonny Dykes (OC and WR Coach at Tx Tech)
2) David Cutcliffe
3) Hal Mumme
4) Al Borges
5) Houston Nutt, if fired from Arkansas

Wide Recievers Coach:
1) Kippie Brown
2) Jim McIlwain (Mich. State)

Line Coach:
Fulmer should coach his own OL.

Special Teams coach:
1) John Baxter (Fresno State, Special Teams and Tight Ends)
2) Brian Schneider (UCLA, leading the nation in KR/PR)
3) Shane Beamer (former UT Grad Assistant, Frank Beamer's Son)

IF I had to look for a Head Coach, I would talk to...
1) Norm Chow
2) John Chavis
3) Mike Leach (TX Tech)
4) Pat Hill (Fresno State)
5) Mike Shanahan or Steve Mariucci (which ever one is fired)

Out ot curiosity, what makes TT qualified to be OC at a top tier SEC school? I think TT was a great addition and brings alot to the table, but I don't understand why everyone thinks he would be a great OC.

Some bad suggestions here.

Trooper hasn't proven he can be netter at OC than Sanders. I know some think anyone would be, but there IS a reason he has held the job so many years and it's not all just because Phil likes him.

HIRING ANY CURRENT OR FORMER HEAD COACH AS AN OC WILL DESTROY THIS TEAM. They can NOT do it. That being said, it just leaves Dykes and Borges on a short list. Gotta find some more willing and able coordinators.

I do think we need a new WR coach.

I do think Fulmer should be able to coach OL.

I do think we need ONE special teams coach, but Beamer has been here already, and moved on. He didn't do much when he was here.

I don't belive at this point we need a new head coach, but no way my list would include Hill. Shannahan is a Gator, no way I'd look at him. Mariuchi sucks. Also, IF we were to hire a new head coach, as much as I like Chief, I don't want them to come from within. When we need it, I want new blood.

First, Fire JRS. He hasnt a clue on how to coach a physical Offensive Line.

Second, Hire a permanent Full time ST coach.

Thats it. Those of you who are of the opinion that hiring an OC to change our offense loses site of the fact that RS is running what CPF wants run. Bringing in a new OC who thinks with a different offensive mindset is a waste of our time and his effort.

I would hire Richard Simmons as an interim assistant conditioning coach to trim some of the fat off our O-linemen.

His defenses might have been crap, but the guy put points on the board. I remember UK put 40+ on us for 2 or 3 years in a row...luckily we put up more :biggrin2:

My question is this (and don't get my wrong I think Trooper is the best thing to happen to UTK football in quite some time): What has Trooper Taylor done at any time that has shown you he has OC abilities? He is an engergetic and charismatic recruiter. He brings a ton of energy to the practice field. But, has he shown you at any time he has a great offensive mind or some amazing knack for play calling? He is great at what he does, but lets not assume his talents reach into areas he hasn't demonstrated. I think UT should go out and get an established OC that would drool at the chance to come in and work with UT's talent level.

Leach is a different kind of guy, but he is a certified offensive genious. While in Lexington his nieghbors commented that he used to roller blade shirtless around the nieghborhood at night. No doubt thinking about the next defense he was facing.

What I like about ML is that he would not be insecure about bringing a big time DC in, or letting Chavis do his thing. Problem is there is no way he would come to Knoxville to be an OC.

Realistic changes that could be made would be
1. for Fulmer to take over the Oline
2. For Fulmer to fire someone off of the offensive staff, or Caldwell the special teams coach (just to light a fire under the rest of the staff)
3. Beg Cut to come coach QBs, or send Ainge to see Bill Walsh over the summer out on the west coast
