Regarding Pope hire:

“I think that’s a great hire. Coach Pope and I connect on a good level. It’s amazing that he got that promotion and I think he’s going to be good in that role. We’ve been talking for a minute and we’ve been building that relationship for a while. He sent me the video they did for him and it was awesome. Time to work now.”

In case anyone had doubts, the skills displayed on the gridiron with Chicago’s Simeon does transfer beyond the state of Illinois. Sunday at the Rivals Camp Series in Indianapolis, four-star receiver Malik Elzy balled out taking home MVP honors tearing up top defenders from the Midwest. The look from the recruiting trail, one lucky team is closing in on landing the big target.

Elzy has been busy this spring feeling out potential next level landing spots. Stops have been made to Cincinnati, Tennessee, Purdue, and Illinois with his most recent unofficial taken with Notre Dame.

Stepping outside typical Big Ten recruiting areas, Elzy spoke about his time in Knoxville with the Volunteers.

“Tennessee was dope,” Elzy shared. “That was my first time to a big SEC school, I was taking it all in. The stadium is huge. They are working. They got something they are building. It is amazing.”

One thing that is for sure, Elzy wants to put the recruiting process behind him before his senior season.

“I want to commit before the season, sometime this summer,” Elzy stated.

"Tennessee is still in the running for four-star WR Malik Elzy of Chicago, too. He's another name that probably hasn't been mentioned enough..."

Balled out at the OT7, named by 247 as an honorable mention (my phrasing) top performer on Friday night and then in the Next Five Offense Saturday night:

"WR Malik Elzy – Elzy had the catch of the night as he plucked a ball out of the air with one hand in the back of the end zone and got a foot down for six points. The big-framed wideout had a similar highlight-worty catch Friday for the Midwest Boom. So, it’s safe to say that he has a knack for making big plays. Elzy is considered a wide receiver by trade, but he could grow into a “move” tight end depending how his body fills out."

That bolded part is interesting to me, if for no other reason than the fact that theoretically he could be a "2nd TE" while we still take 4 true WRs. Kind of like Seldon at RB...

He told Wilftong "“llinois, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, Purdue and Cincinnati,” when asked who the "big hitters" are in his recruitment. OV'd Illinois the first weekend of June and goes to UC this weekend. Sounds like Michigan and Tennessee will get OVs in the fall if it goes that far...

Bump. Think staff had backed off a bit but wonder if they get more involved with Tate off the board.
