That's right, four months after signing then interim coach Bill Cubit to a two-year contract, he was fired today by new AD Josh Whitman. Just wonderful timing.

Wonder who Whitman will hire? He's definitely an Illinois guy.

This is weird! Something he must have done. No way this happens after only 4 months & not even into his next season without something going on with this coach.

Yeah - I cant believe he didnt fire the basketball coach too - Groce is horrible

Bill Cubit's son was also working as the offensive coordinator and they fired him too. Maybe a nepotism complaint was filed or something. The previous AD gave Groce an extension until 2019 so maybe the buyout was too much to let him go right now.

If he's not the right guy then the smart thing to do is move on sooner than later. And finishing about 70th in recruiting is an indication he's not the right guy.

The state in such huge a financial mess - I can only guess its boosters that are making the payouts on buyouts and hires right now

Illinois Fighting Illini hire Lovie Smith as new coach

6 years & $21 million? Oh my! No wonder Lovie leaped to college to take this job. This is quite a bit of mula for an Illinois program that's not been too good for a while.

Probably the best they could do just because of the fact you stated (havent been any good for awhile) No established big name college coach would risk reputation to try and fix the program
