Since BTO is a little late, I thought I would start a postgame thread with a few thoughts.

1. The Illinois atmosphere was great. Their crowd was ready for the upset. With a #1 ranking, expect that type of environment every game we play until we drop a couple. I do think the crowd and the Illini coach impacted the referees. I am not one to criticize refs too much, as I have refereed a few times and it is a difficult job, but I thought they let the atmosphere and coach affect the way they called the game. And they just blew a few calls at the end.
2. Justin Gainey was great. What a way to step up in the second half when he was needed. What a luxury to have a senior that will take a backseat to others most of the time but has the talent to step up when needed. The layup at the end was clutch.
3. Dubar and Phillips chipped in nicely. Dubar seems to have a nice stroke when left open. And he seems strong enough to help inside when needed due to injuries. Philips is the high energy guy that rebounds and defends. Lucky to have that depth with Estrella out.
4. Chaz Lanier's shooting kept us in the game early. He is no Dalton Knecht but probably the closest thing we could find. I think him not being as dominant means some of our other players know they need to contribute and don't defer too much like they maybe did to Dalton last year. it helps our balance IMO.
5. Mashack's confidence in his shot seems to have regressed. I love all he brings to the game but Illinois dared him to shoot from outside. I expect other teams to copy Illinois and lay off of Mashack until he proves he can hit a few shots. He did a lot of other things great and including a few tough lay ups.
6. Milic- although his outside shot was off, he did everything else well. I am impressed with him as a rebounder and defender. He is very versatile. I don't expect him to shoot that poorly from 3 again. His shot looks too good for that.
7. Okpara- Looked a little lost out there. hopefully he gets back on track as we will need his presence in the SEC grind.
8. Speaking of the SEC. What a dominant showing last week. Dane Bradshaw said he thought 13-5 would likely win the league. So many good teams.
9. ZZZ- Not his best game but he is still the key to this team. The SEC has some great guards this year. Expect some great battles throughout the season. I like ZZZ and Mashack as well as anyone.

Good write-up Leanna. (by the way, it's Jordan Gainey, not Justin.)

The biggest thing we learned from this game is we have a backup for Z. I have been worried about this aspect all season, Z can't play every minute in this very very tough SEC conference season. Boswell looked very good as well.
Boswell getting minutes in this OOC slate is gonna be huge going forward. He just has to be able to give ZZ like 5 minutes extra of rest. If we can play ZZ 28-30 mins a game instead of 32-35 it bodes well for us pushing far in the tourney. The fact ZZ can play 35 mins a night is awesome.. the fact he has to is not awesome. This game showed that....but Boswell developing kinda moots that.

Seems like Gainey is going to be ZZZ relief before Boswell? In the past Gainey appeared to struggle in the point guard role but he’s come a long ways there. Hopefully, this game will increase his comfort level even more.

Still selling nonsense, I see.

Maybe I am misunderstanding here. We won without ZZZ playing big minutes. In fact, he barely played in the 2nd half. Boswell played well in his limited minutes but it was Gainey running the offense for most of the 2nd half

Gainey still won’t be the answer most games. Hes a scorer. A slasher. A shooter. Illinois didn’t have a guard that can really pressure the ball. Thats where we will miss ZZ if he’s out of the game for extended minutes. Gainey has been great in his role but handling the ball and initiating offense isn’t his thing imo. He just needs to be able to steady the ship until ZZ gets back in and I think he can do that well enough. He was fantastic though last night. An absolute pleasure to watch.

Every set of refs outside the SEC is going to hear about how physical we play prior to the game. All away games will look similar to this game, assuming it's a halfway decent team.

Looked like Lanier also did a little bit of nominal point work while ZZ was in foul trouble before he fouled out.

it cannot be overstated how insane it is we won this game. ZZ barely playing the second half, and Lanier fouls out. if you told me this happen on the road at Illinois i would've bet my house we get killed.

Shot 31%

Allowed two 4 point plays in the second half

Nuts.

So how did we win?

Defense. They shot even worse (at home), they turned the ball over more. And got out rebounded.

Speaking of Bilas, he was extremely complimentary of UT last week while calling the Syracuse game
Lol yeah, sometimes people only remember the time that X commentator said something negative about the team. I think it was at some point last season that some random poster accused Jimmy Dykes of being anti-Vol because of something he said after a loss lol. Dykes has gotta be our biggest cheerleader in the national media imo.

Other than the Duke tournament game, Bilas has always been high on us. He went to F'ing Duke and we manhandled them for a Sweet 16 spot. WTF was he expected to do? He could have been a little less biased, but I give him a pass.

Hell, Dykes froths at the mouth over us. I bet he mentioned Knecht's high release 100 times last season, claiming he was NBA ready

Anybody else listen to what the Illinois coach said afterward? He’s a smart guy. He basically said that with the removal of the charge call that everyone should just duck their head and drive straight to the rim. Worse case, you miss the shot. Best case, you make it and they call a foul on the defense. Maishack took 2 elbows and shoulders directly to the face and got called for a foul every time. Terrible calls, but that’s the new rule. Gainey is one of the only guys we have that does that. That was part of the big discrepancy in foul calls in the 2nd half. They did it every time down. ZZ tries it some but is usually looking to draw help and pass due to his size. We could use a couple of other guys to do it when the shot clock is going down. Maybe Maishack or Igor. Dubar?

Solid write up and the team defense was SUFFOCATING all night long.

I listened to the coach late Saturday night. He was honest about his strategy and it was working. It is sad it has come to this.

Agree with moat everything you said. However, we all know Knecht was something very special, but I don't think we have yet seen the best of Lanier. He is more of a perimeter player and will never be as effective inside the paint, but he can shoot close to 50% from the outside and the mid-range. I think he will become very consistent in his shooting. His defense seems to also be improving.
