I'm going to put my realist cap back on for this Alabama game

I don't see it as being a negavol to point out we are playing away at the #1 team in the nation's facility and we are unranked. It's going to be difficult to pull out a win in Tuscabumfreakwherever. That said, there's nothing wrong with being excited for this team and the vast strides they've made and giving them a chance by supporting them in an upset!! Do I think the stripes will call it right? No chance, there is too much money on the table, if the game is close Bammer will get their call, always do, if it comes down to keeping a hanky in a pocket and the NC being played without an SEC team this year, that hanky will stay put, best believe that. But if our kids go down there and play their donkeys off lights out, do I think they can win? Hell to the yeah I do!!! Until Bama starts showing up with 4 arms and 4 legs per player, then they don't have anything we don't!! GBO!!! Buck Fammer!!!!

I'm a Bama fan and I love my Tide but it's been no fun the last few years playing UT. At least this year UT fans have hope unlike last year when I scolded this board for not at least hoping for a win. Are you over matched? yes. Should you win? No. But the 3rd Sat in Oct has always been my favorite weekend.

I'm under no illusions here. Can we? Absolutely. Will we? We will find out Saturday. Is it likely? I don't think so. I just hope that the good guys go down there with swagger and execution, play their hearts out for 60+ minutes if it comes to that. At least let the toothless in-bread tree-poisoners know that they've just had the fight of their lives. I'm screaming, yelling and singing Rocky Top regardless. I hate the red elephants. GBO.

Your realistic Hat clashes with your Orange shirt! :)

Nah! I can be a realist and a vol fan at the same time, it is possible. I'd rather be cautiously optimistic and then be excited about an upset if it happens, rather than to assume we'll definitely be handing one out and be crushed when it doesn't happen.

So I guess the joy from beating South Carolina is quickly starting to wear off and I'm finally making my way back to a realistic perspective. There is no doubt that the team is improving and looking more cohesive. There is no doubt that CBJ seems to be a great thing for not only the football program but also the fan base. I love the fact that we can go a full 60 minutes now, it literally puts a smile on my face. Seeing our team actually show up after the half and continue playing all the way through the 4th quarter is just.. wow! Yes, we almost beat Georgia(34-31), and yes we beat South Carolina(23-21), two things I don't think most of us were expecting at this point. As much as I would LOVE to see us upset Bama, to even get a shot at it we're really going to have to bring it even more so than ever before. They're not going to allow us the chance to just squeak by.

Here's to hoping though!
GBO!

Historically, UT plays quite well in Tuscaloosa, aside from a bad game here or there. If we can keep it low scoring, this can be one of those 12-9 games. If that's the case, UT might be able to steal it.

stranger things have happened :) it will be the upset of the year when the Vols pull off the upset

I don't understand how saying we are going to lose is being a realist. Can someone explain that? We MAY lose. Our chance of winning may be less than desirable, but we do have a chance of winning. If we didn't I would guess that there wouldn't be people in the media putting Alabama on Upset Alert.

Saying we are going to lose is no more being a realist than saying we are going to win.

This bama team isnt close to being on par with the others...
They beat ole miss 25-0, but ole miss would keep going for it
On 4th down and would come away empty... That should've been
A 15-12 game in the 4th qtr... Arky and uk just suck, so nothing to see
There... They only had 14 pts on offense vs VaTech... And A&M's
Defense is awful... It will take all 3 phases to win, offense is my
Big worry though... But our big wr's could make a difference like
A&M's did...

I just cant see a 28 point game.

Maybe I just dont want to.

I do remember 2011 being tied at halftime down there with QB position being practically nil..

Ill be there..again for the umpteenth time..,hope they can get it to the 4th qtr with a chance

anything can happen in a rivalry game. 2-3 years ago, UT needed a field goal to beat them at the death. The kick was blocked and kept us from upsetting the team that would be Nat. Champs that year. We weren't exactly in the top 25 that year either. I'm not optimistic about the game but I am definitely not writing my team off before it even starts.

I've been known to make a bet or two in the past. Not these days because family life forces me to put aside wasteful things...but during those days, I never bet on the Vols. The reason is because I always felt the way I do now...confident that the Vols will win. I could never do the proper analysis because my heart was always shouting over my mind. I came to realize I could never properly pick a Vols game because I always knew they were gonna win. I am ok with that. I know I am a hopeless fan that will never be able to see the negatives that might cost them the game. If they lose, I'll be disappointed, but I'll get over it...I've had a lot of practice the last couple of years! Go Vols!

You seem to forget who was coaching the Vols the last 3 years. You feel like you had no "fun" during just the 3rd Saturday in October? Imagine how unfun it was for us EVERY Saturday.

Sorry but by and large you have not been a "realist". Realism DOES NOT equal pessimism/negativism any more than it equals optimism/rose tinted glasses.

Yes, we almost beat Georgia(34-31), and yes we beat South Carolina(23-21), two things I don't think most of us were expecting at this point.
Ahem... some of us "realist" DID expect USCe to be a winnable game.... and UF. I personally thought UGA was a stretch but that was before they lost Gurley and those receivers.

I can't remember if you were one who went on the attack against me or not. I don't care to go back and look right now just so I can say "I told you so." But some of us "realists" KNEW this team had sufficient talent to win 7 games and to beat someone like USCe. Now they only have to finish 3-2 to reach that mark.

Honestly, I am not surprised. I full well expected Jones to beat someone he "wasn't supposed to beat." I knew he had the talent... and felt he was a good coach.

As much as I would LOVE to see us upset Bama, to even get a shot at it we're really going to have to bring it even more so than ever before. They're not going to allow us the chance to just squeak by.

I have never held out much hope for this game... but there is always at least a sliver of a chance.

The problem is that they are not only very talented but also very disciplined. They seldom beat themselves. They seldom make mistakes and when they do they seldom seem to pay for them.

Hoping for the best... prepared for anything less.

Here is some legitimate data to justify that sliver of hope from the ever reliable Ron Swanson, who scoured the Alabama boards:

"Starting NT Brandon Ivory is suspended this week. Backup DEs LaMichael Fanning and Anthony Orr are also suspended.

Sounds like true freshman A'Shawn Robinson will take the NT spot.

Dee Liner will probably burn his RS this week @ DE. Saban mentioned him last night in his presser. "We will probably have to play him this week on the defensive line."

CB Bradley Sylve who started last few games is out with injury. True freshman Cyrus Jones named starter. His first career start" (http://www.volnation.com/forum/tenn...-recruiting-forum-football-talk-viii-148.html).

I know that Alabama has tremendous depth across the board, but these data, along with safety Sal Sunseri's season-ending knee injury, makes me wander if Butch doesn't have an extra special dose of uptempo, smashmouth, hit-them-between-the-tackles ground game in store for the tidy bowl boys tomorrow.

I feel your pain. We went from expecting to win under Bryant to hoping to win with Shula, a downhill grade all the way. Remember we had a few coaches BUST with us too. I just hope for a injury free game with the better team winning, US :)

This part I don't get; on here we have people acting Alabama is down and will point out all that has been pointed out here, but in doing so you pretty much have to admit how biased you are because you clearly aren't judging both teams on equal ground. Basically you're only pointing out bad things for Alabama (and in most cases you're stretching) and ignoring really any bad stuff for us.

We can win, anything is possible, but acting like Alabama is down in any way is a bit silly.
