I want to find a good course that teaches skills for dealing with emergencies. I'm not really talking about emergency/disaster preparedness, I'm more talking about survival skills, like first aid, what to if you get lost in the woods, what to do in an active shooter situation, how to deescalate a situation with a mentally ill person having an episode, etc.

Is anybody aware of such a thing?

boot camp? Boy scouts of course learn that (I mean, when you do "real" scouting) along with whatever woodcraft that want to learn. Sky's the limit. That's the most obvious.

It stands to reason there might be a market for that. The reason there is such a thing as boy scouts is that boys went out and did this stuff on their own, just to kill time and have fun, and somebody thought they ought to form a club. Baden Powell thought he ought to write them a manual. Information is of course more available than it's ever been. if you want to learn how to navigate in the woods, that's pretty easy. You could probably read a pamphlet and spend about $10 on equipment and an afternoon getting yourself lost and be done.

This triggered an old memory of an episode of "Gomer Pyle USMC" where Gomer, the supposed idiot, gets stuck with his drill sergeant during survival training and they gain weight due to Gomer's hidden woodcraft skill. The scene where they come out of the woods smoking cigars is awesome.

I was in scouts and I learned first aid and all that but I'm looking for something more comprehensive. Because retention and recall is hard for me, I need more than a pamphlet for me to commit this stuff to memory. I need to invest real time and $ with hopefully some sort of certification. That will help incentivize me to get the results I want.

The few emergency situations I've been in, I've surprised myself with how well I handled them. If I'm one of the people who can think clearly in an emergency, I need the knowledge base or the coolness under pressure is kinda useless.

Looks like there is a MasterClass on wilderness survival. That's not comprehensive enough but it's probably really good.

The gun range in my neighborhood has a staff of excellent instructors who teach courses needed for peace officer certification, private security detail, etc. Might be able to find something like that for active shooter training. Many of the classes in the courses don’t actually involve using a gun yourself but are for dealing with the situation, and awareness. Find a range like that and at the very least they might be able to point you in the right direction

Sounds like you’ll need a few classes. Local gun range in Nashville does a gunshot wound triage class. You can take a first aid certification class through Red Cross. You can take a class in bushcraft/outdoors survival at a lot of places in east TN or NC. Nantahala Outdoor Center comes to mind.

First aid, CPR, and AED training are generally bundled together. Red Cross or local provider.

Active shooter training is done by local police in my experience.

Mental health management, no clue.

There are a number of crisis management training offerings but those will get into systems and structures not skills for direct response.

I don’t think there is a one stop shopping for these and most require refresher training given the limited use.

I'll just add here that orienteering (how to not be lost) is a sport and you can google that and get involved in the sport. The fact that it's a sport is presumed to be an incentive, but you decide. I know that to create an emergency demands that you don't have a map, but you need experience. And it's not torture.

Looks like REI teaches a wilderness survival class.
