and need to know what to ask for it. It's kind of unique, so it's hard to find a comparable price online.

Anyone know how to find out what this is worth?

1971 Weatherby Varmintmaster .22/250
26" barrel
In original box
Never been sighted or fired
Howa Trigger

Sounds sweet. I would caution however, be very careful how you sell it. Can violate several state and or federal laws if not done properly. I've seen people who didn't know get prosecuted. Ie, selling online and mailing across state lines to the purchaser.

Thanks, SDV. I've bought through gunbroker and an FFL, but never sold. I'll need to check it out.

I found a similar gun on GunBroker with a starting bid of $1,600. But it's used. How of a premium for an unused gun?

With the Howa trigger I've got to assume the whole gun was manufactured in Japan, correct? Many actually prefer the Japanese models as "shooters" but the German Weatherby's carry more panache. (and higher values)

If it's in the condition you indicate that certainly bodes well. What is the wood like? That's always a wildcard as some stocks just have nicer wood than others.

This seems to be a comparable piece and did sell at 1400 so that's obviously a "reasonable" price. You might be able to go up a bit from that, especially if you've got a well figured stock.

WEATHERBY VARMINTMASTER JAPAN AS NEW 22-250 Weatherby Rifles > Sporting for sale, gun classifieds or gun auction from Craig Townes. Buy or bid on this WEATHERBY VARMINTMASTER JAPAN AS NEW 22-250 in the category Weatherby Rifles > Sporting on GunsAmer

Thanks. Yes, it's Japanese - and I had heard the Japanese were better shooters, but I didnt' know the German's still fetched more. My real question is what kind of premium there is on an unfired gun.

The finish on the wood is slightly worn where it's been resting in the box. But other than that, looks beautiful.

When you get into the really nuanced areas of selling something as a true collectors piece things get dicey as such traits are only "worth what they're worth" to the buyer. In fact, strictly speaking, I'm reasonably certain even back then all MK V's were test fired to keep up with Weatherby's 1.5" accuracy guarantee. (Actually that's another thing...does your rifle have the factory test target?) If that's the case it's technically impossible to sell as "unfired". Again, just something that may or may not be an issue with a prospective buyer.

Rock River would be my #2 choice

Yeah I forgot about them. A buddy of mine has a LAR-8, it's a pretty badass rifle. Never have shot their ARs, but they have a good reputation. Bushmaster is the one that I always warn people about, every one I have picked up is loose between the upper and lower.

My dept. carries only Bushmaster. Never had any problems.
