Ok people, so it seems to be a consensus that our D and some of our Offense are too slow and that's a huge reason why we get pummeled against good, solid opponents. So, tell me..why is Mizzou soooooo fast. They recruit 3, 4 and 5 star talent just like we have the past 5 years. Hell, I don't even know if they have had a top 10 recruiting class in years! Why are they sooooo fast and we soooooo slow?

Byron Moore....4 star Juco top DB that chose us over Miami, FL. Would he have been fast if he went to Miami? Why is he so slow? Justin Coleman....5 star stud recruit when came in. Why is he getting blazed so badly on every freakin play?! Brian Randolph...another 4 star recruit. Slow! Why are these guys slow while every other team's players are sooooo fast? I don't get it lol

When you play tentatively and take bad pursuit angles, it makes you look a lot slower than you really are.

Add in the fact that the team is hurting for speed and it compounds the issue. CBJ said in the last presser that speed was a premium in recruiting. He sees the need.

Bad angles on defense is the worst issue. Plus the fact we seem to play 10 yards off any other team's receiver until the ball is in the air. Then we break on the ball and miss the tackle. We are just bad in the secondary and a big part of that is no speed.

Some recruiting ratings are wrong. Moore is an overrated recruit. That was discovered at USC and he left. Tennessee signed him later but he's still not close to a 4 star. Coleman was a marginal 3 star from Day 1. Don't know where u got 5 star on him.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is why we are too slow when most of these players were 4 or 5* recruits when we landed them. Where do you find these so called "blazsters" at? It just seems like every other team out there is fast and we are not. Would they all be faster on different teams? Is it the coaching? Development? Should they have not been recruited by an SEC team like Tennessee?

If my memory serves me correctly, Coleman was a 5* recruit out of VA....4* at minimum. Why does he play like a 2*?

It did seem that Dooley put more emphasis on size than speed and I always knew that was going to hurt us. That said, I'm getting tired of hearing it. Speed is a problem. But it's not the sole reason we're getting absolutely thrashed by the likes of Missouri. We had blown assignments, missed tackles, dumb penalties, dropped passes, etc. Those aren't really speed issues. Those are coaching and discipline issues.

We've had plenty of players in the past with speed issues (if I recall correctly, Kevin Simon ran something like a 4.9 40 in his pre-draft workouts). We still shouldn't look as completely inept as we did against Missouri's 2 star and 3 star players.

He was a 4* on a site or two and 3* on the others. Randolph was a 3*. Moore was a 4* but it is interesting to note that the negative on his Scout profile was "Closing Speed".

defensive backs are the hardest for the recruiting sites to correctly grade. There's just not the passing in high school there is in college and some defensive backs simply cant adjust to the faster college game and talent of the QB's.

Please list the 4-5 stars you are referencing. Randolph and coleman were 3. Toney is a walk-on if I remember correctly. AJ was a 4, but was akways considered a run-stopper and not a coverage guy.

I think you are slightly delusional on the talent level of our defense.

Plus, its yet another year where they have to learn a new defensive scheme with new coaches. Some speed can be attributed to reaction time. If you have to think, you'll be slightly slower than if you are experienced and react off instinct knowing the plays by heart. There's a lot more to it than simply "they were 4 stars"

but

for the life of me i cant understand why no one can get J.smith to beast out

The first paragraph is 100% true. Thinking quickly and playing instinctively make up for a slower 40 time.

The second much less so. UT may not have enough fast guys but they have enough not to look slow compared to mizzou.

FWIW, MU's highest rated class in the last 4 years was 21st. IIRC, they started more guys who were rated under 3* than over 3*.

Let me explain it. When the opposition runs by you like you are standing still, you are too slow. When your rbs have no breakaway speed, you are too slow. When a player can take one side step and outrun 7 players across the field for a td, your entire back 7 is too slow.

Ok, how about Jacques Smith out of Ooltewah, TN?? Wasn't he listed as a 4* recruit on every site? How about good ol Corey Miller? Wasn't he a HIGH 4* or 5* recruit coming out of HS? He was one of the top ends in the country! Theres 2 for ya...I can keep going if you really want? lol

"Lack of speed" is also one of the more common excuses for coaches who don't get their players coached up to play their lanes and gap assignments.

Mizzou has played several slower D's this year.

Toledo is not faster than UT on D. They held Mizzou to 172 yds and a 3.66 yd avg.

The only team that allowed more rushing yardage was Murray St. UT allowed more than Vandy, Ark St, and Indiana.... none of whom have more talent or speed on D than UT.

defensive ends and lbs are the biggest issues.
