Im still not understanding the whole "we are too slow" slogan..

What was different about Wilcox's defense compared to the one we run now? We saw improvement the first year under his but not so much with this one. Anybody know?

Wilcox described his own philosophy on D as one that was simple for his players to run but hard for opponents to recognize. IOW's, he didn't ask the players to do difficult things but disguised what he was doing... alot of different "looks" but only a few plays.

No one has had much trouble deciphering this year's D.

Speed makes no difference if you are being physically manhandled every play and on your heels.

I think people get in a big hurry and say current players are "slow". In some cases that is true... but it would be much more true to say that there aren't enough fast players who have the skills to help the team.

R Jones, Williams, and M Foreman are supposedly fast guys... but they can't get on the field. If you were the DC, had a speed issue on your D, and had faster guys on the bench... would getting those guys ready to play be a pretty big priority?

I think as I said earlier just because you are fast on Thursday does not mean you are fast on Saturday.

You're a retard if you truly think he isn't D1 talent.

Proof is on the field. Playing hard doesn't equate to D1 talent when you're slow as molasses, can't cover in zone, can't cover in man, can't get off blocks, miss tackles, etc

Why doesn't this defense blitz? I never understood why we didn't blitz McCarron at all. We just let him pick us apart for four quarters. Someone told me that we didn't because Bama was too balanced. So wouldn't try to blitz some since there so balanced? It doesn't make sense.

We don't blitz because when we do we leave multiple mismatches with a slow ass d.

Don't you think (I'm asking) that if you're being picked apart for the first half we should at least try to put pressure on the QB instead letting him sit there in the pocket?

Say what? I was talking about Wilcox basic defense versus this years. Wilcox's was far better than the one we run now.

Wilcox ran a bend but do not break style defense and the players he had seemed to fit that style of play.

Jancek wants to run a pressure style defense which isolates his corners. The problem we are having is the front 4 are getting absolutely no pressure and when they do they allow the QB to break containment which results in big plays.

IMO we have DB's who have the skill set to play zone. I would like to see more zone ran or as sjt18 said to disguise or coverages better. Right now opposing offenses are licking their chops when they see Toney or Swafford matched up one on one.

WTF are you talking about l? Our defense has been 100 times better this season.
The stats don't show it. We are giving up slightly fewer yards per game, due to fewer plays run by opposing offenses. The yards per attempt are very similar. This year we are giving up 12 inches more per rush, and 7 inches less per pass attempt, as compared to last year.

So does Jancek's defense have blitz packages? Why or why not? Thanks.

I am not sure and I do not think he has the personel to fully implement his style. I have seen AJ blitz but rarely I cannot say that I have seen many corner or safety blitzes. I think once he has the depth on the d-line you will see more blitz packages put in.

One of the big problems with the defense is the number of snaps they are being forced to play and lack of quality depth.

I'm just saying that just about every time we have blitzed, zone blitz or man, teams have an easy time throwing it to a back, slot, or TE in space against their choice of matchup.
Offensively, what teams do we play against in the SEC where our rb or TE is a weapon in space against an lb or safety? There aren't any.

Amazing that stars only matter when they say another team has talent or when they say UT doesn't.

For instance, MU has ELITE talent... in spite of poor recruiting class and player rankings. Bama has ELITE talent as validated by their recruiting class and player rankings. But none of UT's guys are any good regardless of their class or individual rankings.

On paper we still have more talent than about 90% of the teams in the country. On paper that's only good for 6th in the SEC. Given the coaching turnover, maybe how we have played this year is not so bad. The only less-talented team we have lost to (on paper!) is Mizzou.

And whatever you say about our overall level of talent, we are THIN at DB. The fact that we started a former walk-on - against I HAVE NOTHING and APPRECIATE THE EFFORT OF - but nonetheless a former walk-on speaks volumes.

And as I post elsewhere, WR is the one place Mizzou DOES have elite talent. The best in the SEC IMO.

With our DBs beat up, it was strength vs weakness.

I still think we could have performed better...this is not an excuse, but I am going to make an exception to saying we are as talented as Mizzou in this one matchup. I don't think anyone in the league matches up against their WRs outside of bammer and maybe UF...but hey! Uf got torched a bit to. So there you go.

I got you. We really don't have that matchup.

If I am not mistaken Toney missed the tackle against Georgia that allowed them to get a first down and go on to score. The fact is there are match ups that do not favor his skill set and other coaches have figured that out.

Nope. It was the TD. To the left side of the D. Danielson was all over him.

That's one bad play...it could happen to anyone. I am NOT jumping all over Jaron. I appreciate his efforts. Hopefully he learns from it and improves.

At the same time, if we are in a discussion about talent, Mizzou has three legit NFL receivers and we started a former walk-on at DB.

I sincerely hope we see more down the road. It's depressing to see this defense get ate up every week. The good thing is we have speed coming.

Okay, I had to look it up. Here are the rankings of Mizzou WRs coming out of HS from the consensus ratings of Phil Steele:

Dorial Green-Beckam - No. 1 WR...hell, No. 1 PLAYER in class of 2012 6' 6"

Darius White No. 3 WR in class of 2011 6' 3"

Marcus Lucas No. 25 WR in class of 2010 6' 6"

LaDamian Washington not in top 50 WRs class of 2010 6' 4"

Interestingly, they start three, but LaDamian starts over Darius.

When I saw the height of these guys flash up on the screen pregame and watched how fast they were in warmups, I was kinda worried.

As for NFL prospects....can't say on the DGB, he is not yet eligible, but as for the others:

Marcus Lucas is barely 7th round and LaDamian is 6th round per current projections...okay lower round but still could make a roster.

FWIW.....

Didnt read all the posts, but did someone bring up the Strength and Conditioning program...could they be putting on too much muscle and not stretching enough...makes them tight and slower...plus the added weight from the extra size...

Not sure if serious. I hope not
