This is what I have learned from watching elite programs making the right hire. They include, but are not limited to UK with Billy Clyde, U of L with Petrino, and Florida with Meyer, and UT with Bruce.

1. The fan base gets an immediate shot in the arm. The Volnation needs something more than the false hope of "watching film and working like heck".
2. The culture of the team changes for the better. There is nothing like playing for a good coach he has something to prove.
3. Recruits are much more likely to take notice. It sends a signal that mediocrity will not be tolerated.
4. The current players are now on equal footing, and the athletes have another chance to distinguish themselves without bias.
5. Perhaps this is the most important one. The team becomes relevant on the national stage, even if it is a one year honeymoon. People begin to talk positively about your team again.

I mentioned this in another thread, but one of my best friends is a Michigan State alumna, so I end up watching almost as many games of theirs as ours. They've been floundering for years, and now they have what just about everybody agrees is a great hire for them -- Mark Dantonio, who built the Cincinnati program up from nothing. It's been amazing to watch the complete change in attitude of their whole fanbase since they hired this guy; the energy and optimism surrounding what has been an incredibly negative and fatalistic program has been something to see. One guy has changed everything.

(At least until they lose to Michigan again, I assume.)

What's Notre Dame thinking about their big hire?

It got them some darn good national attention, and they managed to squeeze a pretty good recruiting class out of it. Charlie outcoached a lot of people to win for two years. He has just run out of horses for now.

Charles can't out-coach anyone, every team they beat was just in a slump.

Terry Bowden is coming back to coach next year I hear :zeitung_lesen:

He could have a very corrupting impact
