I asked this question in game thread earlier today but no response. What was the preseason expectations w this team? Regionals or Omaha?
What about now?

Regionals for certain and a very likely chance to get to a Super Regional. Omaha is always a crapshoot no matter how good you are, most drive by posters don’t understand how hard it is to get to Omaha. That was my preseason thought and still is today….

Yep - depth, clutch hitting and a little bit of luck are major components to get to omaha. Look at Arky last year. All you can do to really get an advantage is have a very deep pitching staff. The rest is up to the baseball gods.

Making the CWS last year was phenomenal. Of course a win or two would have been great, but after being down for so long, I was very happy.

I’m a homer for Tennessee baseball, but I try to manage expectations. I sip the koolaid, I don’t bathe in it😉. Here’s how I’d personally measure success:

1. make Hoover (I’ve been around where this was aspirational). Winning the SEC tournament would be great, but I hope for more.
2. Make a regional (if better, go to 3)
3. Host a regional
4. Make a super regional (if better, go to 5)
5. Host a super regional
6. Make CWS

Right now, I sleep easy that 1 will happen and that barring an absolute meltdown, that 2 will happen. I feel pretty good that 3 will happen. After that, I hope Tennessee can do it.

3-3 over the next two weekends would be a great result, IMO.
If the Vols go 3-3 in the next 2 weeks, we probably win the SEC going away. I’d say 2-4 is more likely and keeps us on track for a good year. Schedule sets up nicely with Mizzou, Auburn, Alabama, Kentucky and Miss State showing deficiencies. Hope to sweep Mizzou, Bama, and 1 of Auburn/Kentucky. That leaves UGA & UF as toss ups that we should split. The goal should be 20-10, which is where we ended 2021. We could realistically finish this season 23-7 if we have a great year.

I expect to host a regional and super regional if we are fortunate enough to win the regional. It’s amazing the turnaround of this program in such a short time. Not too long ago we were going to the last game of the regular season just to make the 12 seed and get to Hoover. It’s nice to not have to worry about that anymore.

My expectations at the beginning of the season were muted. That's because of the injuries to Tidwell and Halvorsen, the untried and unproved catcher, and the new and unproved double play combo at SS and 2nd. I've been astonished so far at how those things have not hurt us, at least not yet, through 20 games, although poor defense was a factor in our loss to Texas. I'm still not convinced that our defense is gonna be good enough, but if it is the sky is the limit for this club. They sure can hit and they sure can pitch.

24-6 - win SEC
1) host regional -
2) supers
3) CWS
4) National Title and I think it’s going to happen. I do not get any negativity with this team. I just don’t see it.

I can recall when making it to Hoover seemed like a pipe dream.
I’ll acknowledge that I jumped on the bandwagon early last year and have no grasp on reality when it comes to Tennessee baseball. It has become the sport I looked forward to more than any over the last year. Vitello is the type of coach every fan of every sport at every school yearns for. He’s the young, fiery coach that recruits lights out and hires a genius assistant and has immediate sustained success. I have to constantly remind myself that we won’t win every SEC series.
