Last year around this time we all debated the reasons for the season going sour -- culminating in a 5-6 record and the coaching carousel.
The very general reasons argued for the poor performance on the field -- and we're talking offense specifically -- were:
1. The players aren't executing
2. We weren't talented after all
3. Bad coaching
I would offer the following line of reasoning for punctuating that our pitiful play was COMPLETELY due to number 3.
1. The offensive statistics this year say enough by themselves. But I would offer the offensive performance last night as one example of the difference a year makes.
2. We have far reduced the number of penalties related to discipline and mental preparation.
3. Ainge is a new creature. He, other players, and the Chavis have all commented in one way or another that Cutcliffe & Co. have totally changed the entire mode of operation over there.
4. Our WRs, that are now so highly acclaimed and making plays all over the place were labeled "not playmakers...can't get open...not athletic enough...drop too many passes" and on and on. Magically, those guys that couldn't get open against FL or anyone else are suddenly impossible to cover. Hmm.
Now, we could on and on. But the MAIN point I want to make is simply this: EXECUTION COMES FROM PROPER COACHING. It is so refreshing to see our offense coming back to life with Cutty back. We're not going to be perfect, but it's so much better.
I have never been so exasperated as I was last year with the coaches and many others placing the de facto blame on the players under the guise of "not executing." Well, we have a less talented team this year playing light years better than before -- really than the last 3 or 4 years.
Once and for all...all of the lunatic fringe fan base that was screaming for Sanders and Pat Washington to be replaced years ago were proven CORRECT. It could not be clearer. The dumb fans were right; Fulmer and the water carrying media were wrong. It was coaching. I'm just sad we had to wait so long for the experts to finally agree with us and get it fixed.
