1.) Although Martin was on several of the lists mentioning possible candidates, the hire kind of came out of nowhere.

2.) One way to look at Martin is to compare him with another possible candidate we were looking at, Gregg Marshall. Martin, in his 3rd year won the MVC while Marshall, in his 4th year, never won it.

3.) My gut reaction when I first heard the news was that the hire was underwhelming as I felt there was more time to reach out to other candidates.

4.) The more research you do, the more impressive Martin is. The fact that Missouri wanted him badly, even if it really means nothing in the grand scheme of things, made me feel much better about the hire.

5.) All in all, I think he's a solid hire. Does that mean we'll be hanging banners in the near future? Who knows.

I think it's better than solid. JMO though.

Like I've been saying all night, if people will do some research on the guy and not take the hire as it first appears, I think most will come around.

If he can recruit at a top level, and can get the same effort out of new recruits that he has gotten with MSU players, then we will be in good shape against almost everybody in the SEC.

Also, you've got to love the determination and fire that the guy has shown through his entire life.

I have nothing against Coach Martin, i actually know very little about the man, and he may end up winning championships here, and i certainly will support him.

But, the fact that Hammy and Co. gambled & settled on an yet another unproven up and comer again with a flimsy resume when i feel that we have the resources/facilities to get a known commodity really just pisses me off at the whole bunch of 'em.

But since i and other fans have zero input in the matter i will quote the smashing pumpkins and say, "Despite all my rage i'm still just a rat in a cage", and will resign myself to wait here hopefully and see.Cause that is all i can do.

Unless he makes a final 4 he won't be hanging a banner. He will simply be adding a sticker to a previously hung banner. :)

Great post, Law.

Although Martin was not in my personal top 5 he was still a solid hire.

He is an outstanding person, to boot. That is a tremendous upside considering who was the previous coach.

I don't think any of us will mind if he brings talent like Hummel, Moore, or Johnson.
His team was committed to defense/rebounding despite, no size.
I see no reason why we won't be back into the tournament within 2 years.
If he doesn't bring in good recruits by his third year we can begin to worry.

I found it funny that alot on here were mentioning big names, that we'll throw money at some big name coach and he'll come running to Tennessee because we are top 5 in attendance and have great facilities. This is Tennessee basketball after all.

This is the exact kind of hire I expected. I've read about Martin and I think he has potential and I like the fact that he is from the Gene Keady coaching tree. Hopefully he is a success here and continues to build on what Pearl started. I for one am 110% behind our new coach and wish him the best of luck.

Go Vols!

I'm warming up the the hire. Also, if you look at Purdue's recruiting since '08, it's gone down a bit. All the stars of the current team were 4*'s from the '07 class.

Is Coach Cuonzo the only SEC coach who played in the NBA? I couldn't think of another one off the top of my head. That would have to be a positive on the recruiting trail.

The only input you have Rat boy is over or under when changing the toilet paper roll at McDonalds! As you stated you don't know anything about him,but still take a shot at the admin for his hire. People look like idiots when they admit they don't know, but still argue an unknown point!

One thing Hamilton will have as a legacy is that he loves shopping in the bargain bin for coaches. Sure you can find a good deal or two at the Dollar General Store, but is that really where you want to be buying your bigger ticket items?
If the football AND basketball programs were/are so distasteful to top coaching prospects, what does that say about Hamilton's job as an AD?

I think that people that blindly follow where they are led could also be percieved as an idiots. You just don't worry about it and let Hammy, Cheeks and co. decide your opinion for you OK, sheep boy.

The POINT is that we have great Facilities and large sums of cash to throw around and most people feel that we needed to hire a known coach to retain our recruits, try to weather this NCAA storm and save face.

once again this may be a great hire, may not be, but it definitely is a questionable one wouldnt you say.

So since i have a mind and an opinion is it ok that i question the man based on the facts that i do know. Like he has a thin resume, only SEC caoch that has never taken a team to the NCAA tourney and that i do follow college hoops but know little of him. With that being said i like what he has done at Mo State, and his pedigree.

BTW, Someone posted earlier that one of our 2 recruits Kevin Ware Tweeted "who?"in response to the hiring. But i guess he is an idiot too, right?

Hey, while i got you on here Can you make that a combo and supersize it for me A$$clown?

Rat boy and A$$clown. Sounds like a cartoon of some sort.

May prove to be a good hire but Rat boy has a good point. I remember telling a friend early on that I was not very impressed with Hamilton's hiring of Todd Roleigh and he replied that MH told him - have you met Todd Roleigh?

Well if it looks like a duck -----. A$$clown, you and Hammy better hope he is more of a Bruce Pearl than Todd Roleigh. Note-- I may have misspelled CTR last name - sorry.

If we also had a program that wasn't about to be slammed by the NCAA, then you'd have a more legitimate point.
