Vols Defensive Back To Seek Treatment At The Mayo Clinic
Inky+Johnson.jpg

The University of Tennessee Athletics Department announced this week that Vol defensive back Inquoris "Inky" Johnson will travel to the Mayo Clinic to meet with a team of doctors for tests and evaluations that will determine the next step for him.
"Inky is working with the best doctors in the world," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as he continues on the path to recovery.
"I am very appreciative of the support and care that UT has provided for me and my family during this process," Johnson said. "I have a great attitude about seeing the specialists at the Mayo Clinic and am hopeful for great results."
Johnson was hospitalized at UT Medical Centter for a couple of days, and had surgery to repair injured blood vessels in his shoulder.
The injury has ended his playing career at Tennessee.
In honor of their teammate, the Vols are wearing Johnson's #29 on their Jersey's or Hemets through-out the remainder of the 2006 College Football Season.

:/ He started 8 games at UT, but IMO he's earned a place in our memories. Played hard and ended his football career making a play for Tennessee.

He gave his all for Tennessee.

Does he get to keep his scholarship? Is there any specific information as to why he can no longer play? I wonder if on his senior day next year if they might still let him run through the tunnel and be recognized by the fans. That would be pretty cool.

From what I understand, at this point he's just hoping to regain the use of his hand. That's hearsay, so take it as you will. I don't want to post false information anywhere, I'm just sayin'....

Under the circumstances, they will take care of his schooling, just as they will be footing the bill for all his treatment and rehab. If he wanted to remain a part of the football program in some way, some type of mgr or assistant, I'm sure that would be arranged as well.

I'm not certain how this works exactly, but am pretty sure that under the medical hardship rules, Inky gets to remain on scholarship without that scholly counting against our number...

someone on this board has the hit that inky put on samardsza (sp?) as their avatar.

whoever it is, could you post it? i would like to see that clip, and youtube doesn't have it.

and i'm very sorry that inky's playing career is over. and i hope that he is eventually fully healthy. i imagine that UT will let him keep his scholarship. he'll be able to get a degree and will hopefully be involved with the team in some capacity. tough kid.

Sad news. Best wishes to Inky and I hope he regains full movement in his arm again. :crossfingers:

What could've been...

Hope he has a very successful life. Maybe he can coach UT's secondary someday...

the play on which he hurt himself, it is easy to understand why. For some reason, he very awkwardly threw his right shoulder into the air force player in an attempt to knock him out of bounds. When I saw it, I couldn't help thinking: Yikes, no wonder he got hurt. Lots of injuries are freakish--certainly not every tackler has anything close to good form on a lot of plays--but in this case an awkward tackle resulted in a serious injury. Sad--and I wish him all the best. I'm hoping that he will regain some movement/functionality in his arm/hand.

Washington, Allen, Harrell, Johnson. These names should be in the front of Meachem's mind when he is making his decision this offseason.

That's very sad news. I was always a fan of Inky. Small player with a big heart. He gave his all for UT, he will forever have my respect and I hope for the best recovery.

Unfortunately, you are very true. As for Inky, I did not realize his injury was that serious that he can't use his hand. The news on him was vague from UT officials. He is definitely in my prayers.

After witnessing firsthand what happened to Jason Allen and Justin Harrell when they gave up likely first day draft consideration, I really doubt Meachem will come back for his senior season.
