i am not a basketball guru and have only followed the college game for a few years and truly despise the nba, but i have a question for those more wise than myself. in college basketball what is the fundamental difference between an intentional foul and a regular type of foul? now i ask this because, during the oklahoma vs. oklahoma state game this evening, towards the end of the game the okie state players started to foul in hopes of getting back into the game. i see this just about every single bball game i have ever watched and do not understand why a guy almost got a technical but instead received an intentional foul and his coach removed him from the game. i guess i just don't understand why every foul towards the end of a game, where you clearly see a team "intentionally" foul a player to send the other team to the line to get the ball back with as much time on the clock is not in fact "intentional."

what exactly is the fine line with this? i am still trying to learn the game and pick up something new everytime i watch, but maybe i missed something with this particular situation. but i just don't understand the difference and i am hoping you all can help me out.

Not sure really - they are supposed to actually go for the ball when fouling at the end of the game like that - but they just go for anything and more often than not end up grabbing more jersey and arms than coming close to the ball and I guess the refs just let it slide since it's not dangerous or harmful and its evolved to that.

Pretty much what bassman said, it's supposed to be an attempt at the ball but in most situations with the foul wanting to come as early as possible, is not. I guess from there it's up to the official as to whether or not it's truly called an 'intentional' foul.
