I seem to recall an SEC East team last year that had a great defense but no offense to speak of that couldn't get past Vandy for a trip to the weedeater bowl. That's the difference between having Mark Richt vs. Phil Fulmer for a head coach. Richt is going to adapt to whatever strengths his teams displays and find a way to win games while Fulmer is going to charge headlong into a brick wall with the same old thing.
I happen to like Richt a great deal but you couldn't be more wrong.
Fulmer is too loyal for his own good sometimes. Loyalty is great thing... until it blinds you to someone who isn't doing their job.
Sanders should have been gone long before he was. Not because he was a bad guy or even a bad coach but because the chemistry between him and Fulmer was poisonous to the players. It left them undisciplined on and off the field. It left them with absolutely no sense of team or appreciation for what they'd been given.
The chemistry between Cut and Fulmer is seemingly a near miracle cure. The magic definitely seems to still be in the potion. And the facts are that Fulmer declined without Cut and Cut got fired without Fulmer... I hope both of them are smart enough to figure out the value of their relationship.
If Cut leaves, Fulmer should look for someone with his same leadership and personality type to avoid repeating the same mistake. But my opinion is that Cut would be a fool to leave and UT would be foolish not to pay him enough to stay.... shoot, Fulmer should split his salary with him in appreciation for saving his job.
With that said, Fulmer has strengths that have served him well. There are alot of coaches who would trade career histories with him in a fraction of a breath. He's won a NC and Richt hasn't though arguably Richt has had more talent for several years now. In fact, look around the SEC and point to the teams that are currently coached by a NC coach. Auburn, USC, and UT... not UGA... not LSU... not UF.
The Vols SEC title hopes are still very much alive.
I didn't think UF would escape Knoxville. I still don't think they should have and wonder if it would have been all that close had Coker showed up week earlier None the less, UF now plays LSU, Auburn, and UGA in consecutive games. I am still not impressed with their offense. Their defense beat both UT and UK partly because neither team could run very effectively. Now they play three teams that can do nothing if not run the football.
I think they will lose two if not all three of those games. UT catches UGA at exactly the right time. UF isn't so fortunate. The one thing that Richt has over Fulmer hands down should play out by then- he's decisive.
If UT beats the Dawgs which I expect then either Stafford or Cox will probably be the full time starter for the next two weeks leading up to UF. Just enough of a passing game is needed to open up the run for them. They shouldn't have it in place by this Saturday. They should have it well developed 3 weeks from Saturday.
If the Vols win out then they'll probably win the east and have a great shot at the west rep which still might not be Auburn. They can legitimately still have a shot even if they lose once more though it will be more difficult. If the lose two more times then they need to shoot for 10-3 and build for next year when they return alot of guys in the two deep.
