Winning the SEC in his second year with players recruited by the guru we know as Zook... Is Urban Meyer the best coach in the SEC?

Hm. I honestly believe Meyer is the second-best coach in the SEC. Looking at things objectively, Fulmer's Tennessee teams have not been great without Cutcliffe around, and I dread how this season would have gone if he hadn't come back as OC. Spurrier is another possibility, but I don't think he'll be able to pull down great recruiting classes at SCar. Recruiting is part of the game.

In my estimation, Richt is the only coach in the SEC better than Urban Meyer.

Don't think any coach is head and shoulders above the rest. Meyer certainly had his time management issues tonight, end of the second half. Richt has had this problem as well in some games. I think Tuberville, Richt, Meyer, and Spurrier would be in the top 4. None really far above each other.

I wouldn't put Tuberville in there... He's had some problems motivating his guys. The difference between a coach with sporadic success and one with continual success is the ability to motivate.

He won like 25 games the previous 2 years before this one didn't he? I would put him in there. Not sure he has been all that sporadic.

Exactly what I was about to post. Zook may not have put up great results, but he is apparently a good salesman.

...which is a good thing for Zook. When his lack of coaching ability once again catches up to him, at least he has some solid, marketable skills to help him out in his next profession.

Keep in mind, if not for a bad personal foul call at Neyland Stadium, he would be 2-1 against the Vols.

i say tuberville, richt, then it evens out a little. Well of course for the great O, I don't include him in discussions like this because it's not fair to everyone else

At some point, TN fans--myself included-- need to give props to UM. He has gotten results, and his tranfer from Utah, let the SEC in interceptions this year.

I hate him, but he is proven himself to be a viable opponent.

i think if meyer can do it next year he'll become the best coach in the SEC. he's gotta stop his crying and whining though. it will be interesting to see, and if tebow does become the superstar so many of you and so many cbs announcers claim, i will eat crow. we shall see next year.

If you want proof that great coaches can still be whiners, look no farther than Bob Stoops.

Who wouldn't be whining after getting screwed by the officials in the Oregon game? If that hadn't happened, they might be in the discussion for the BCS championship.

No they wouldn't. Not after that beatdown at the hands of Texas.

no. i can't put a coach that is worst in the league in peanalties and that has such a poor fg kicking game as the best coach in the league.

now, he's in the coversation now. and SEC title in year two, using a lot of freshmen, integrating his system with the current personnel etc...can't be ignored. add to that his recruiting while he's been there. he's setting himself up to be the best coach in the near future.

win the NT this year...and it will be harder to say he's not that's for sure.

but Richt has proven that he's consistent and winning 2 SEC Titles and playing for another in his short term is pretty impressive.

Tubberville is a good coach, but he's a trick play gone bad away from looking like an idiot. He's gotten by on his guts imo. that SC game earlier this year with the fake punt i think it was?, was very gutsy and had it gone bad, he'd be proclaimed the biggest moron ever.

Spurrier at SC has proven to be a thorn in everyone's side, and probably will be ready to make a move on the SEC w/in the next two years, if not next year.

if Spurrier wins the East at SC...he'll get my vote for life as the best coach. his resume is unmatched:
won the ACC at Duke....DUKE...in Football.
resurrected a Florida program from probation in to the elite SEC program...

so he's already in that upper echilon of college coaches...taking SC to the next level would surpass just about all of them imo.

Fulmer doesn't suck, but he's not on that level either. He took over for a TN legend, when the program was already on the rise, and took them to that next step. his legacy will be written over the next few years if he can get us back to that kind of level after being all the way to the top, and all the way back to the bottom....can he get us back to the top? if so, he belongs in that conversation...because what he's having to do now, is what good coaches do. what he's doing now is what Bob Stoops did after taking over at OK. What he's having to do now is what Nick Saban did when he took over at LSU. What he's doing now is what Mark Richt had to do when he took over at UGA.

Now, can he do it? if he can under the current landscape of the SEC, with the current coaches in the SEC....he belongs. If he can't....well....you know what happens then. but i would put Fulmer 4th or 5th at best on the list of good coaches in the SEC.

I am apt to give Charlie Strong the credit for this season. Cryer's offense still has a long way to go. That defense is one of the fastest in the country.
