John Pelphrey has withdrawn from consideration for the Ole Miss job. Does this mean he's waiting to see if the rumors about Billy Donovan replacing an NBA bound Tubby Smith are true, thus opening the Florida job for him? I've seen and heard that scenario played out on boards and in bar room conversations. I for one would welcome it, because it would make UT's job easier by weakening UF and UK both.

Wow, first you down the SEC for being "weak" then welcome an opportunity for it to become weaker. Hmmm.....

Would Donovan want the Kentucky job? What are they paying him at Florida?

I could care less what happens to the other 11 teams in the SEC. As long as UT's winning, I'm content.

A caveat: If Ole Miss, as now appears certain, hires Andy Kennedy or Mick Cronin, I'll root for them to do well.

I'm sure they will appreciate your support. :p

Exactly who is touting this idea? I don't see it on any of the main sports news boards. Sounds like utter speculation to me.

Donovan has been at UF for ten years. I am having a hard time seeing him make a lateral move, especially within the conference. A Big East job, maybe, but Kentucky? Makes no sense.

Lawgator, Kentucky is a "lateral move?" Get real. As to the genesis of this, here's my end of it. Last summer at the Big Time event in Las Vegas, the topic of Tubby's flirtations with the NBA came up among a group of people having a few libations at the Venetian. I asked the question of an individual I would certainly consider an expert, 'Who would replace Tubby in such a scenario?" Tha answer I received was " Present company excluded, I think Donovan would be the man." That of course led to the rational follow up, "What about Florida?" The response was " All I can say about that is, Jeremy Foley LOVES John Pelphrey." I left it at that. However, it makes sense. Unless it's simply a case where Pelphrey knows Ole Miss is going with Cronin or Kennedy, there's no reason for him to bail on the opportunity to get into the SEC, except that he thinks something better is imminent. The NBA season doesn't end until mid-April, if Donovan bolted to Kentucky, Florida would have a tough time luring a big name replacement at that time. But getting someone to leave South Alabama wouldn't be difficult at all.

LG, got to agree with Hatvol. Kentucky, along with Duke, North Carolina, Indiania, Kansas and UCLA are in a select group as far as basketball. Donovan would be crazy to turn down a Kentucky offer.

Momentary detour: I stayed at the Venetian last weekend. Incredible hotel. Stay away from the Bellagio. Gorgeous but it has a sensor in the door that weighs you and figures out how many hundreds you have and then they take them from you.

Back to topic at hand. I would agree with you in most cases that Kentucky is in a different class of job than Florida, but not right now and not for Donovan. Right now, Florida has every bit as much of a claim to being a big time program as Kentucky. Maybe not in terms of prestige, but we are closing in on them. And Donovan knows he has built a program at Florida. I just can't see him walking away from that unless it is to a Big East program or a school that he can bring back from the brink (no, Kentucky is no such school).

Also, the conversation you cite is folks making rumor a year ago in Vegas. Hardly an indication of any substance to the idea, no matter who might have nodded their head at the time.

I'm just saying, a couple of the guys at the table have enough "knowledge" that I wouldn't consider what they say just speculation. Actually, one of the guys at the table is the man I think will be the next coach at Kentucky.

I'm confused. If "present company" was excluded, but you think Donovan is going to Kentucky, how could the next guy at Kentucky (Donovan) have been at the table?

As an aside, if you love college hoops (and can stand 115 degree heat) the summer tournaments in Vegas are a great way to spend a vacation. It's like fantasy camp for hoops junkies.

I don't think Donovan's necessarily going to Florida. I think there's a guy whose team is in the Oakland regional final on Saturday who is tailor made for UK. I'm just reading the tea leaves and comparing them to what I heard last summer. By the way, Ole Miss hired Andy Kennedy tonight.

I saw that and think its a good hire for them. Cincy made a mistake in my judgment.

Cronin will do a good job, and he's from Cincinnati. Andy's actually from Mississippi. I think it works out perfect for everyone.

Not with the way the administration handled the situation. If Andy was the guy, they should have given him the job at the end of the regular season when they upset West Virginia.
