How Dabo built Clemson into a monster

Kinda epitomizes the saying right place at the right time. For both him and some of his coaches as well as players.

Tennessee's (Kiffin) malfunction in recruiting a certain QB helped Dabo drastically.
He does a great job of appealing to kids. He’s passionate, seems genuine, and comes across as warm and caring. What’s crazy is that he’s done it without top 5 classes. He hasn’t had a single one yet. 2020 will change that but does that mean the kind of people he is recruiting is changing as well? Who knows? It certainly proves this game is just as much about player development as it is recruiting rankings. I think their classes have ranked from 7th to 16th the last several years and they’ve certainly played better than the average of their class rankings and even better than the best one, which was 7th. There’s absolutely no one to stand in their way in the ACC either. It’s like FSU of the 90s.

An overlooked factor in all of this is what you mentioned...playing in the ACC absolutely helps them get to the playoff more easily. You cannot take away how they play in the CFP once they get there, but he absolutely has an easier path than any school from the SEC, Big Ten, or Big 12. Everything is cyclical, but working in Clemson's favor is that there's only one other established power program in their division, FSU, and they currently are a mess. The SEC West meanwhile has 4 programs that could be humming at any given time (Alabama, LSU, Auburn, A&M), and in the East you have 2 power programs + a third that has been dormant for over a decade. There are really only 4 football schools in the entire ACC (Clemson, FSU, Miami and Virginia Tech).

He also has a lot of stability among his assistant coaches which is rare for a program as successful as his. Venables has been there since 2012. Chad Morris was there from 2011-14 and Elliott/Scott have been there from 2015-present.

Excellent point on the coaching stability. That’s huge.

Clemson should at least say “thanks” for all the mismanagement by Tennessee that has benefited them.

Not much difference between 1 and 10. Especially if you evaluate & develop good. Clemson has done both. Plus got lucking with Hunter Renfrow.

According to many on here that’s a world of difference.

Dabo does a decent job of getting kids to stay 4 years there too. Helps a lot with roster management and building depth.
