Someone posted this on VQ earlier verbatim. They took it and ran with it. Not saying it isn't true, but they are using the message board as their source.

Hard to beleive it wouldn't break an NCAA rules. Offering an ownership stake in another team to lure a coach. We shall see.....I'm in jack!

Pretty sure the NCAA would have a problem with a college HC being a part owner. Conflict of interest would just be the beginning.

the NCAA is weird, so who knows... but! I dont see why this would be problematic. part of gruden's alleged compensation plan includes ownership in an nfl franchise. the ownership stake is simply in lieu of more cash. to me, it's no different than if Gruden wanted to be paid in cattle and exotic spices from the new world.

"Part of the offer is Gruden getting a piece of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, who were recently bought by Jim Haslam, one of UT’s biggest boosters who played on the Vols’ national championship teams in the early fifties."

I could be wrong, but isn't Jim the son of Jimmy (who played on these teams)? Jim is the Haslam that bought the Browns, right?

You're getting Jim and Jimmy backwards. Jim is Bill's (Governor) and Jimmy's (current CEO of pilot) father.

Could he not sign the contract now for part ownership and when he retires from tennessee put it into action. There are ways around the NCAA

Stock in the Browns could be gifted to the University and then made part of the deal. If this happens, it could also take care of the "bolting for the NFL" problem because the NFL probably would frown upon anyone coaching one team when they owned stock in another.
