Interviews post SC

"I thought we had some chances. It wasn't for a lack of effort. That was for sure. We played really really hard, wanted to win badly. It just - it wasn't our day in some ways. And then we compounded it with a couple of things. I think we'll look back, and there were four or five things that we could have controlled."

"I joked around with the team and said that the SEC wasn't quite ready for us to do all that and end up being in first place in the league."

And TN had several chances to absolutely destroy USCjr.

He’s an incredible coach. That team doesn’t touch our talent or experience, but their team defense and discipline in offensive sets were as absolutely good as ours. I don’t look forward to playing him every year. Hard to deny what he’s done with that group of guys.

He really is gracious in this interview and actually not giving straight “coach speak”. He even remembers Santi making a defensive mistake late in the game. That shows his attention to detail that shows in the team. On the flip side he recognizes the emotional part of the team and the role that JJJ and Santi play as leaders. I have really been critical of JJJ for his inconsistency, but to hear Barnes give him props for what he does off the court shows his ability as a developer of men as well as players.

I like LaMont. But I do think a few of his comments felt like sour grapes. I get it. He is frustrated that his team lost a title on their home court. But I don’t love the subtle implication that the SEC officials didn’t want them to win. That was a very physical game, and I agree it was poorly officiated, but at least they were consistent in their lack of calls.

Two thoughts:
SC will be a tough out for somebody in the NCAA.
SC will have to fatten Lamont Paris’ check book if they want to keep him.

There is no doubt that he has done a tremendous job there this season. That team is tough, has no quit and is very well coached.

It will be interesting to see if he can sustain it long term.

If that game was officiated more to the norm, it would have favored us more. The main reason SC was in the game was because they were allowed to play EXTREMELY physically. Unfortunately for them, we can also play physical ball, however we are at our best when not getting assaulted under the basket.

SC’s game plan all year was to use physicality to level the talent gap, and when the refs allow it, it works but they can’t be mad if they get called for fouls. It’s like when UGA’s DB’s play physical under the assumption they won’t get called for PI on every play.

I liked his interview and think he's really a great coach.I don't think he blamed the officials as much as his team not able to deal with some things. He mentioned that his guys had trouble dealing with the contact off screens. I don't think his team was ready to transition to a street fight while UT is very experienced at it.

Also, just an interesting side note. Paris played at Wooster College, same college that Jack Lengyel left to become the head football coach of Marshall University after the plane crash that took the lives of the majority of Marshall's team and staff.

Lamont is going places. Did a great job at UTC and is doing a great job at South Carolina. He will be getting offers from bigger programs soon enough.

Respect for him and his team. They are tough

Yes, he was implying the refs controlled the game for the SEC, he was OK with DK getting 26 on 21 and they would have won the game if they had stopped UT in transition which was in their control, not ours. The game was won with defense not offense. I saw a good game plan by Barnes going directly to Aidoo, forcing the defense to collapse, and opening things up for DK. If Jonas had hit the layups he would have scored 30. They were lucky this was not a blowout.
