This is my first topic, so I feel it appropriate to introduce myself and tell you a little about the man behind the computer screen. I'm 20 years old (college student) and grew up an hour from Knoxville, so to say I'm a vol fan is an understatement, I've been raised on Vol food while breathing Vol air my entire life. I've played both football and baseball on the collegiate level (albeit DIII), and I've played against Dennis Rogan, Skylar McBee, and Tyler summit in high school. I've lurked this board for a long time and decided a few days ago I may as well join up and show my support for the teams I follow.

Now, on to the post game commentary.

1. Scotty hopson has become consistent over the past ten games. He may look downtrodden with his body language, he may even still have horrible halves. But he has become our effective team leader and is doing an adequate job at it. He may not be the first rounder we all hoped, but he is still an NBA level talent, even if only on his athleticism.
2. Josh Fields adds an extra dimension this team has never had before. An interior post presence who effects nearly every shot taken around him. Add him to our rotation last year... and we may still have been talking about our matchup with Duke/Butler.
3. Speaking of things we didn't think we could imagine, did anyone envision seeing skylar lead a fast break for pearl to score an easy basket? Name me another team in the country that has been ranked in the top ten in a season while playing two walk-ons/DII players consistently in the rotation.
4. Cameron Tatum may be our new consistently inconsistent player. When he averages 8+ points and plays defense, we win ball games. When he jacks threes and misses easy oops, we lose. Today we just got lucky because of...
5. Brian Williams. when williams plays on this level, there is not an Sec team that can beat us (unless kentucky magically makes Kanter eligible by some deal Cal has with WWW). Keep him coming off of the bench. It makes him play like the NCAA tournament player we had last year.
6. Back to Josh, Sorry, the announcer still has me screwed up, John fields, how many people saw the ten second aside to give him "Auto Zone celebration of the game." Has there been a more shameless plug?
7. On topic of brief asides that have nothing to do with the game, how many Pearl time lines did you all see? I may have zoned out, but I didn't see one. Surely something is amiss at ESPN/SEC network HQ.
8. Chris Warren is a ballplayer. I feel bad for how many teams have legitimate players in the SEC only to be surrounded by guys who wouldn't start on some intramural squads. Also, Warren has a great chance at a UFC career based solely on his beard. He could be a lightweight Kimbo Slice.
9. Tobias has much to learn still about the ways of basketball and life, however, he is still a legitimate first round pick. Late first round. But by this time next year, I see him being top 15. His passing ability and rebounding is a scary combination. His pass to Bone when he drove to the lane and drew all the defenders made me think of a Larry Bird highlight film I watched last night. Let's hope he's half the player Larry was before he leaves here.
10. The best analogy I can think of for this team right now is like a teenage girl who is just starting to leave the awkward years. We were very young starting off the year, looked very well despite our age and expectations. Then we hit 11 or 12 years old and starting look awkward, playing against each other. we are starting to trim the baby fat and lose the not yet a girl/not yet a woman look. By the time Pearl is back we should be 18 and ready to hit the real world and take the SEC by storm. Of course we could also end out like Disney stars and crash and burn under the pressure. Either/or

Thank those of you that read all of that, hope to get to know you all better, though i'm sure many will disagree with some of my comments (I hope so at least) and GBO!!:victory:

Good post, welcome aboard, it's nice to have another person with insight and basketball knowledge. I agree Hopson is playing much better and the leader of the team. On the other hand, Pearl is definitely a D1 player, he made 4 huge plays for us today and is really having a good year. He has constantly provided defensive sparks, which lead to offensive points. Pearl needs to be in the lineup one way or another for at least 10-15 minutes a game. McBee on the other hand is very limited in what he can do and should probably only be inserted to spark the offense.

Your spot on regarding Harris. He will be a first round pick, but needs another year in school and has to work on his low post scoring and outside shooting, especially 18 foot jumper and jump shots from the corners. Fields is a great shot blocker but he's not a strong rebounder because he tries to block everything and gets out of position. He needs to learn to stand his ground and get rebounds. Ole Miss and UCONN got way too many second chance oppurtunities.

great job, we may have played against each other in HS Basketball, where did you play?

I played at Oneida High School. We weren't much of a basketball team sadly. But our football team my senior year was absolutely loaded. We sent 6 players to DII or DIII schools, and our high school has a student body of 400. Lost in the final four to the state champions, and really could have beaten them with a break or two the other way (similar situation with LSU and UT this year, too many men on the field, except the refs didn't catch it)

In basketball we played Skylar and beat him at home, lost the away game my senior year. (I won't say what we did to their team in football... But in the first quarter we had four touchdowns, two offensive, two defensive)
Tyler we played at a UT summer camp, and to be honest he was one of the worst ball players i've seen. He cussed the refs several times for not getting foul calls and turned the ball over quite frequently. This was a JV game my freshman year.

I played at Middlesboro, got to play against Hopson my freshmen year (watch him from the bench rather, until we were getting beat by 30 with 2 minutes left and I got some junk time). I had the pleasure to play with a pretty good guard named Stuart Miller that started his career at Louisville and then transfered to LMU where he finished his career. Also Skylar was a beast in mens league games, like unstoppable against random church league guys, who knew.

When we played skylar they posted him up because he was bigger than any of our guards. The game we beat them he had 12. the game they beat us, I believe he had 30. I want to see him do well but barring a Jodie Meeks type game where he doesn't miss anything I don't see him being more than a spark plug at best.

During some time last year off school I worked some up and down the east coast. I worked in Hopkinsville and they are very behind Scotty. I was also able to meet Travis Ford and his parents in Owensboro, KY I believe it was. He found out I was a vol fan and smirked a bit.

Yeah it's literally ten minutes from the border with KY. Not a fun place to live TBH. Time can be spent doing various bad things or reading up on sports. I did mostly the latter, and a bit of the former.

I don't understand how so many people butcher Fields's name. He's been called Josh Fields, John Shields, Josh Shields, etc. smh.

I mean this with all due respect to my hometown, but it is one of the more backwater hell holes in the state. County's unemployment is around 20% year round. The only two high schools don't even play each other in sports. It's kind of sad really.

A) Welcome

B) Unless you want to be associated with a poster who fell out of favor a long time ago, don't use the blue smiling face with the sunglasses in your posts.

Good write up.
