The whole focus of the entire Dallas political world is now inevitably concentrated on the upcoming Dallas mayoral elections in May 2007. Incumbent Laura Miller’s decision not to seek another term has resulted in a multitude of candidates that is expected to grow even larger before the final deadline for filing official nominations approaches.

Since lack of popularity and name recognition was a problem for most candidates, they began their Dallas Mayor Campaigns from the beginning of the last year. The challenge that most of these candidates faced was to build the name recognition necessary to mount an effective campaign. Since the voters of Dallas are not particularly known to spend time inquiring about their candidates, their vision, or what they stand for, the candidates the aiming to create a strong name identification that the voters can identify with.

Some candidates, however, will not have to strain as hard as the others to create name recognition. These are the candidates who are already popular figures in Dallas. For instance, council members Gary Griffith, Ed Oakley and Mitchell Rasansky have higher name identification than most of the other candidates. Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill is another popular figure, who yet has to give a final word of confirmation on his candidacy. These candidates owe their popularity to being City Hall insiders. There are also certain popular City Hall outsiders running for mayor. They include Dallas businessman Tom Leppert, former airline executive Sam Coates, journalist Zac Crain and Dallas lawyer Darrell Jordan. Darrell Jordan was placed second in the 1995 mayoral elections behind Ron Kirk.
