Iowa inks 26-year-old ex-felon - CBSSports.com

Hubbard was charged with four felonies during his teen years, when one horrible mistake set back his life in a big way. In December of 2003, the then-18-year-old attempted robbery, burglary and battery on a man while invading said man's house. Hubbard initially got away, but soon thereafter turned himself in, pleading guilty to the charges -- malicious wounding, possession of a firearm and robbery -- pressed against him.

Hubbard spent nearly four years behind bars because of it. He was denied parole three times. Think D-I basketball was even on his radar? No.

Here's how unlikely all this was: Hubbard, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound guard, never played high school basketball; he never graduated, properly, from high school. And until two years ago, he'd never participated in organized hoop. Then, after completing his high school diploma, Hubbard enrolled at Odessa Junior College, located in Texas. He had skill, but didn't know how much. After a year in Odessa, Hubbard wanted to be closer to home (Virginia) so he went to Maryland and enrolled at Frederick Community College. Last season he averaged 20.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and was an incredible 64 percent from the floor.

Interesting story. Everyone can earn a second chance, seems this kid has done just that.

As another person who made a bad decision and got a second chance, I wanna tell him good luck and don't blow it

I laughed when I saw this.

Some more good publicity for U of I.

Man... I hate living a few minutes from Kinnick and Carver.

Will be an amazing story of turning one's life around if this guy can prosper at Iowa and leave there with a degree.

I hope the guy does turn his life around.

I was just laughing at the headline.

"13 Iowa players in hospital", "Ferentz son arrested", "Pierre Pierce stalks ex-girlfriend", "Iowa football player gets DUI on moped", "Iowa football players accused of rape".

It's a common thing around here.

A moped (lol) geez. I once heard of a guy that got a DUI going 1/2 the speed of smell on a riding mower. Haven't these folks heard of being the designated drunk.

Wouldn't he technically be considered a felon, or do you lose that status sorta like a statute of limitations???

They have nothing to do but drink and party up there. I have plenty of friends that have graduated from or are currently attending at Iowa and they'll be the first to admit this.

I'm a huge believer in second chances so I'm not going to diss this move unless he screws up again. Besides that, doesn't sound much worse than half the SEC's current football players sadly.

Been to East Tennessee before? Drinking, partying, and meth is about it for most counties.
